Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

Maybe it's because all my steep hills are short, but I really love riding my DD hub motor bike. The motor is next to silent. I installed a suspension fork on my mid-drive bike today and went for a spin. Yeah, that thing does rock it up the hills. Though, without rear suspension, it's kinda...

Wanted a belt drive and internal hub - Ordered a Flluid 2-s

Realistically, if you're ridding 200 plus miles at a crack, you want a motorcycle, not an ebike. That would be torture!

Are newer hub motors as capable as mid drives?

I have a Trek 7.2 that I put a BBS02 mid-drive in, and a 20 year-old MTB that I put a DD hub drive in. The mid-drive is a fast, responsive bike, but I like the hub motor bike better. A large part of that is the hub motor's on a full suspension bike and has torque sensing PAS, though fatter tires...

Looking For a Nomadic Daily Driver

I don't know, but I'm now of the mindset to install DD hub motors on the rear wheels of 20 year-old mountain bikes. Probably doesn't fit the OP's need, but they're such fun machines to figure out.

I saw this link in the thread ebike to etrike conversion: https://trego-trolley.com/home . Might not be right for your use, but it sure is cool!

Differences between hub motor with Torque sensor vs mid drive motor

From my rather limited experience, a torque sensing hub drive gives a good bike riding experience, though you really need a wide range of gears. It feels like it's in that no pain elevation gain magic bicycle zone. I am pedaling that bike almost non stop and loving it. On my cadence PAS...

Canada to restrict class 3 ebikes to 20mph

I'm just learning about the use of regen braking. Watching the watts go the other way is rewarding, though what's promoted is the braking. After my ride today I'm thinking you can drive up the reverse current up by riding style. Things like pedaling into a stop and down a hill while in regen...

Canada to restrict class 3 ebikes to 20mph

With non-helical geared hub motors yes you can, though you need to disable the freewheeling clutch inside the motor. Grin has done this in a motor. Supposedly, some bits of weld can lock up the clutch.

Differences between hub motor with Torque sensor vs mid drive motor

Well, I just installed a direct drive hub motor with a torque sensor in the free hub. I'm really liking it because it is on the bicycle side of motorized bicycles. I also have a bike with a BBS02 mid-drive motor. It has cadence PAS. That bike works great, but it is more on the motorcycle side of...

    A Regenerate Bike

I really like the regen braking, and how it slows the bike in descents. It does seem to be a thing Grin promotes, and they have put some effort into it. The torque arm on my Grin motor engages on a stationary part of the hub, not the dropouts via the axle, so that seems to be well engineered in...

    A Regenerate Bike

By the display (a CAv3) it reads 13.9% REGEN, which seems significant to me. The amount of that energy that actually gets stored in the battery I would assume to be (significantly?) less.

    A Regenerate Bike

The 3 fused vertebrae in my neck limit my drop. Just another story of an old person riding a bike. The regenerative braking, though, rocks! The plus is that it slows your descents. All of my disastrous bike wrecks have been on full crank downhill. Kinda nice to roll downhill making juice and not...

    A Regenerate Bike

I took my new-build out on a shakedown ride today. It has a torque sensing direct drive hub motor with regenerative braking. Looking at the picture, with the front rim white and the back rim black, it looks kind of ratty. Oh well, second build on a thirty dollar bike. The battery was from my...

    Enviolo shifter tips or tricks?

Have you seen the Park Tool repair help for these hubs: https://www.parktool.com/en-us/blog/repair-help/nuvinci-n360-hub-installation-and-adjustment . I believe the Enviolo is the successor to NuVinci, so maybe this will help.

Upgrade of Huffy Oslo folding ebike

Finally got my two "improved" Oslo's out on the road together. My friend loved riding hers, though she's a newbie to ebikes. On our final hill home she rode up on full throttle. I was on full PAS and pedaling with effort just to keep up with her. I guess my fifty more pound makes a big...

    Online E-Bikes - is it a scam?

As an owner of a Huffy with a motor I can't really say if that's an insult to Huffy or not. My Huffy Oslo, a rear hub folder was/is made with cheap parts. Regardless, cheaply made bikes suck because they're made out of cheaply made parts. There is only one way to fix that.

    Which brake first?

My front brake does most of my braking. It's my grab brake! I do simultaneously modulate the rear brake to keep the rear wheel behind. If I'm doing a high speed stop, my butt is behind the seat. Ebikes do complicate braking on a bicycle. Their speed and weight make them mini-motos, yet we ride...

    Class sticker?

I come from the make-your-own-ebike world, and they don't come with no sticker. I say when in doubt move your feet. Your speed may give you away as far as class, but doing thirty-plus mph, if your pedals are going around, you're good. On the street that is, though on mixed use trail one must go...

Experienced biker but new to e-bikes

I'd suggest buying the best bike you can afford. The best bike is the one you like best riding. Some buy a lower end ebike, and then improve and/or trade up (or park it in the garage). Others, like myself, get in cheap by buying junk and try to fix it. That's how I got to EBR, and thanks HarryS...
