True, but climbs in races are rarely at a static pace. It's attack after attack after attack. Conserving energy is important, but if others are attacking, you can't. Losing position before the descent can cost you the race.

Im going to have to look into this, theres more to that overtake than better efficiency

A century with a climb like that toward the end would tend to attract strong riders. Which makes the recumbent rider going that much faster than all of them particularly hard to believe.

They are more efficient for obvious reasons, wind resistance for starters.
Just not for me, I reckon that flag they always fly so as not to get run over probably negates a lot of that

No flag, use a rear strobe and bright colored clothes.
Been riding around cars for 30 years without any incidents.
Biggest safety improvement is looking car drivers directly in the eyes as an equal, sitting in same position as them, with same right to the road.
