Big trouble in paradise

Hi everyone,

I'm Francis, also known as Gad-Far-I, and I'm excited to join the ElectricBikeReview community! I live in St. Lucia, where the hilly terrain makes for some fantastic riding experiences. My previous e-bike setup was a 48V 1500W gearless hub kit, which was a blast to ride! I managed to cover over 2000 miles before the axle broke off the motor.

I'm currently trying to get my new setup going, which consists of a 750W Bafang gear hub motor with a 10-pin output. However, my controller only has a 9-pin output to the motor. I’ve matched up 8 wires, including the three main phase wires and the hall sensor. The remaining two wires from the motor are grey and white.

I attempted to connect the extra wire from my controller (purple) to either the white or grey wire on the motor, but my M808x display is showing error 10, which disables everything except the throttle. Additionally, the motor seems stuck in high gear, and the pedal-assist (PAS) isn't working.

I would love any advice or insights from the community to help troubleshoot these issues.

A bit about me: I enjoy riding, exploring new places, and relaxing by the seaside, and I'm eager to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

Thanks for having me!

Cheers,
Francis (Gad-Far-I)

Must be nice in the Carribbean. Never seen a 10 pin cable. How did you get the wire colors? Did you cut the cable open?

Then you saw something like this,
Thick: yellow, green, blue
Thin: red. black, yellow, blue, green, white, and grey.

Would guess the white is a speed sensor. If you apply +5 power on red/black thru the controller, and put a voltage probe on white, it should flick up and down maybe 6x per revolution because bafangs do that. The grey might be a temperature sensor. There would be some electrical resistance between it and ground (black) if it is a thermister.

Did you buy the M808X and controller as part of a matched pair? Might not work if you bough them ala carte. No documentation on the controller?

Hi Harry, that is correct. It's called Z1019 connector I bought one on ebay to do the connections. The one on the motor is untouched. The controller and display I got on ebay from China, but it's 9 pin out. Something else I noticed is the wires for the display on the controller wasn't a direct match.

Something to note, is that I have a 52v light kit with indicators, horn and controls, with functioning brake light. When connected to my controller the brake light feature is permanently on and doesn't work as intended. I also installed a throttle with ignition key and meter, although the throttle and display doesn't work without the ignition key switch on, my brake light will only go off when I switch off my battery. Just wondering if there's something I'm missing or my controller is not compatible. I had a road test last night, had a two mile climb on throttle only, unfortunately the bike is stuck in the highest level, the display doesn't function and obviously the motor got a bit hot. Broken hearted the ride was phenomenal, but I can't ride anymore until these problems are resolved (HELP)

I see you have a risingsun controller with good documentation. IS your display compatible with it? DIsplays and controllers must be from the same manufacturer and use the same comm protocol.

Displays and controllers often use the same connectors, so you can connect a foreign display to a controller with the display powering up and making you think it works. The better controllers are often designed to work with max throttle and a default pedal assist if they power up. That also make you think it works. If you don;t get a working speedometer and are stuck in the same PAS level, both are just running independent of each other.

What's your M808x manual say about error 10. Is it a comm error?
