Specialized Creo In The Rain

We are riding in the Death Valley Half Century next weekend and rain is forecast at my house and in Death Valley. Will the Creo be okay on the bike rack and riding it in the rain? It’s about 5 hours to get to Death Valley and about 4 hours for the actual ride.

Ive rinsed the bike gently with the garden hose, but it’s never been rained on for 9 hours.

At our shop we’ve seen problems with e-bikes carried on racks in the rain. The electrical systems on these things is designed to withstand living outside in pretty much all weather, but not the blast of highway speeds. Driving down the highway at 70mph into a headwind of 20mph in heavy rain is pretty much putting the pressure washer to whatever is exposed. If the bike, or at least the exposed electrical bits, can be covered that would be wise.

I see a lot of systems are rated at IP54, motors, harness and such… that’s dust resistant and splash resistant. You’d want to see IP65 or higher to withstand a sustained blast of water, so they really aren’t meant for the blast of highway speeds.

Batteries are usually built to a higher level… thank goodness.

My Creo will be on a rack on the back of my SUV, so it will be out of the direct blast of rain and air. I have the option of putting it in the cargo area if I can get my wife to use a small suitcase.

You can always put her suitcase in the passenger seat and put her in the rack.
