Even though I live on the Left Coast, a lot of my clocks are set to UTC:

Fri 31 Oct 14:14:14 UTC 2025

Oh, and a trivia question. What exactly are the differences between UTC, GMT, and Zulu time? A lot of people use them interchangably.

UTC, GMT, and Zulu
All are the same (the time in Greenwich Observatory, 0 degrees longitude). Greenwich Mean Time is an obsolete term. Universal Coordinated Time is the successor to GMT with some correction. Zulu time is the same, for the military and aviation.

It's a bit of a fine point I suppose, but GMT was the former time standard, based on a meridian. UTC is the current time standard, based on an array of atomic clocks.

GMT is now "just another time zone." Zulu is the military name for UTC.

At least, that's how I understand it and I could be wrong...

Just for kicks since we're talking military time zones and we've devolved into trivia (lol), where is time zone Juliett?

I can't be bothered to read all of the posts I am amazed that aparently on one knows WHY the clocks were changed to begin with does no one know their history, in the US apparently not!

The Real Reasons DST Was Introduced

  1. To save fuel and energy — during World War I, the idea was to make better use of evening daylight and reduce coal use for lighting.
  2. To increase productivity and recreation — in peacetime, supporters said people could enjoy more daylight after work.

When Actual Clock-Changing Began

  • First official use: April 30 1916 (Germany and Austria–Hungary).
  • Britain followed: May 21 1916.
  • U.S. first adopted: 1918.
So we’re talking just over a century ago,

Oh, no, we benighted Yanks are aware of why it was introduced lol. It's just that the reasons are obsolete now. Changing the clocks doesn't save energy anymore. And in the summer, we kind of automatically get more daylight after work. The twice-yearly ritual has become a pain in the arse with little benefit. Our states of Hawaii and Arizona have the right idea, maintaining Standard Time throughout the year.

No?!?! Really!?!?
Yep, time zones Alfa through India, and Lima through Yankee make the 24 standard time zones, plus Zulu which is UTC makes 25 letters. Time zone Juliett (the 26th letter) is "your local time zone."

Now, why Alfa is not Alpha and Juliett is not Juliet or Juliette is a whole other trivia rabbit hole lol.

I know this one. These words are spelled the way Spanish or French pilots could pronounce them properly.

Interestingly, an average Danish person would pronounce Zulu as Sulu 😃

Eliminating the time change would certainly make it easier to drive around northern Arizona in the summer. Arizona doesn't recognize DST but the Navajo reservation, which occupies a significant portion of northern Arizona , does observe it.

The time changes 5 times when you drive from Phoenix to Page AZ as you pass in and out of the reservation. The people in page, which is nearly surrounded by the reservation, never seem to know what time it is. A fast food joint I visited had two clocks on the wall, one set to DST, the other to ST. A sign underneath said "Take your pick".

But they're always in Juliett time. 🙃
