With 125% tariffs, will the e-bike market die?

The Tern CEO (cargo bikes) outlined the problem the other day. He has several containers of bikes en route from the Vietnam factory and was doing everything in his power to land and clear them in California before the 47% tariff date kicked in. His tariff bill would go from zero to $1M which is impossible to offset throughout the company, through his wholesalers and retailers, making the bikes impossibly expensive for customers. So he has talked to the factory owner in Vietnam halting all further orders and is discussing with staff and other bike companies what to do. Tern have a facility in Portugal for EU customers so he suspected he'd be using them short term for US market if things continue like this. If the containerships don't land in time he'll divert the cargo to Canada or Mexico as a last resort. But bottom line- a 10% increase they could possibly absorb the hit for customers, but 47% is impossible and to build bikes in US (Trumps wish) involves massive investment and years to implement with more expensive bikes the result. So god knows what Chinese factories with new, what is it now? 110%++? could possibly do.
The Vietnamese factory workers and bosses lose out. The US company workers/staff lose out and the US customers pay more or lose out.

So who the f*ck gains?

Madness.
And who’s the winner…China who has a high level delegation at this very moment in Vietnam to discuss increased trade, ties etc. “You can depend on us” they say, which a thousand years of history says they can’t…but what can Vietnam expect from the US…what can Taiwan expect…the Philippines?
As your post notes the supply chains are already rippling with indecision…I wonder how that will work out?

Trump IQ at least 156
Elon Musk IQ about 135
I'd like to be as wealthy as the 'failed businessman'.
Elon Musk, justy lucky to have become the richest man in the world, starting numerous industries. I'd like to have some of his 'luck'.
Why don't we see how these tariffs work for making America better with less export deficits. For sure, ebikes are gonna cost more.
See Charlie Munger’s comments on Musk as well as his bizarre background…DJT has been described as a “moron” by those who worked most closely with him. I believe his own mother (an illegal btw) said the same.

I don't know what you all are doing about this trade fiasco, but I just bought myself a whole bunch of zip-ties, because they're made in China and the duty is going to suck.
Afterall, an artist needs their media

I just went to Costco and picked up half a skid of Ramen Noodles. Rather hastily as they'll probably be the only thing left affordable in the near future even with a 800% tariff. 🙃

Politics is creeping in again, all I want is a removable battery bike with a DJI motor around five grand, 27/29 mullet, mid range suspension, non squealing brakes, oh and Trump riding an Eagle paintjob.

Anyone over the age of 11 who brags about their IQ has serious problems. Anyone who brags about someone else's IQ at any age is worse.
In the early days of the internet's, I spent hours doing online IQ tests, not 'official' versions, just that style of pattern observation.
I started off hopeless, with a few weeks I was getting 90% , much like cryptic crosswords, you learn to how to to approach them and after a while I realised they just repeat the same patterns at various levels of obscurity.
Real intelligence is the ability to give up and let computers do it.

I assume Stefan referred to the official outcome, which is the electoral college result.
A late answer from my side: I indeed was not fully aware how the U.S. electoral system worked. That's why watching the map dramatically covered with the states where Republicans won gave me the wrong impression the United States voted for Trump as a vast majority.

Polish presidential election is direct. If the first round is not decisive, the second round is the choice between the two strongest candidates. The nation has been strongly divided since 2010, and the election results were almost 50:50 with a few votes deciding for the winner. (Please compare it to the last U.S. election if it were direct; also the Brexit outcome).

Our parliamentary elections are "proportional" (the stronger party gets more seats than it would happen with purely direct election). Here, we see some phenomena resembling the U.S. system. The census has not been updated for years. Meanwhile, many people from sparsely populated regions either emigrated or moved to cities. Currently, the lowly populated regions are over-represented, giving the edge to nationalists and Confederates (a party similar to MAGA Republicans).

We were lucky the 2023 parliamentary election had a huge number of voters participating, which resulted in the rule of progressive parties. Now, we will have a presidential election in May this year. We will see.

I voted for him. Labour won a majority. I don't hate him. Disappointed at the hounding of Labour by the rabid right wing press who rule the narrative, and a bit like the Dems in US bit concerned at Labour's ability to counter the sea of rightwing disinformation you seem happy to lap up. Labour are strangely weak at stating their successes. Like the NHS, which has seen a fantastic transformation after 14 years of the Tory's gutting it. With the whole world seemingly going fascist crazy I'm grateful we have a rather dull sensible government in both U.K. and Ireland right now.

trump is now saying he'll send "the home growns"to the El Salvador prison w/o due process if he determines they are gang members. This is unbelievable. Marco Rubio said people can be deported for their beliefs alone. This is getting pretty scary here.

Oh yes, Americans are going to be so much better off with the tariffs, when exactly does "the golden age" start? RIght now, my golden age is seeing 20% losses in my retirement fund.
Diversification issue?

Stirring the s*it pot to distract in order to consolidate all while keeping himself as the center of attention is the goal.
The sheep love it and follow the scapegoat whack a mole of the day blindly and with enthusiasm.
If you've ever wondered how a total s*it of a human could have risen throughout history.. You're getting a first hand lesson now.
As the saying goes.. Doomed to repeat it.
