This is incredible. Smashes world record. So cool. Who knew people even slipstreamed like this behind speeding vehicles ?

https://www.adn.com/sports/national...g-record-held-by-men-for-more-than-100-years/

Slipstreaming behind a dragster. OMG. No ! (dragsters aren't exactly stable vehicles themselves unless they are going perfectly straight... aerodynamic ? yes. Stable ?.... hmnn...)

128 feet per pedal stroke. Fastest Tour De France cyclists do 30 feet per pedal stroke.

Back in 1899, Charles Murphy hit the whopping speed of 60 mph... behind a train.

I'm pretty sure this is crazier than than my favorite all time caped crusader in a wingsuit, Jeb Corliss...

I don't know what to make of these "speed records." She used a slipstream obviously, as well as a special drivetrain. Not to mention, she only pedaled for 3 miles. Obviously, she would not want to bump into the tail end of the vehicle she's drafting, so her primary job was ironically, not to pedal too fast.

"...Denise Mueller-Korenek rode a custom-designed machine featuring a unique double drivetrain capable of propelling the bike forward 128 feet with each revolution of the pedals, a necessity for hitting speeds surpassing the takeoff velocity of the typical commercial jetliner. By contrast, a typically geared bike might travel about 17 feet with each pedal revolution..."

Here's the video. She is obviously not pedaling very hard. She walks over casually to her driver, showing absolutely no sign of any previous exertion whatsoever. The speed record is solely a product of the draft and special double drivetrain.

edit: also, this is not ebike related.

You realize there was a cut of indeterminate length between those two shots in the video, right? For all we know she could have had 5-10 minutes to recover in between.

She only pedaled for three miles, which is a little over a minute, and only reached 700 watts max. Track racers reach over 2000 watts, and a cat 3 racer can reach 1300.

In defense of Denise!

I had the opportunity to meet her and have a very brief chat at the Interbike 2016.
What she has done is very commendable. While, drafting behind a drag racer does provide a fair bit advantage, she is an accomplished biker on her accord.

She competed at the highest level when it comes to road biking (something like 10 National championship podium finishes and few World Championship finishes)

She is a former US national track, road and mountain bike champion! How amazing is that. Just by looking at her, you can tell she has a physique only that comes with tremendous discipline and practice.

She is on CNN, BBC, WSJ ... everywhere :)

I am glad she is pushing the boundaries. Go Denise!

ya i didn't mean to be too much of a downer, but the whole article is a bit overdone. I suppose she is a great athlete and any cycling news is good, but seeing a 1000HP dragster in front made me say "whaaa?"

700 watts is not pushing any boundaries lol.

This is a fake speed record, she was in a slipstream the entire time and used an enormous gear which required very little energy on her part.

I don't even believe the claim of 700 watts until someone provides the link. I wonder if that person will just disappear from the thread.

I take it then that you are equally unimpressed by Alan Eustace jumping to the Earth from 135,889 feet up. Because he didn't even have to pedal.

Pro riders average about 1120 watts for roughly 13 seconds in a sprint finish. So 700 watts for a minute (while wearing eight pounds of leather) is a hard effort.

Source: The profile of a sprint: What does it take to win a sprint stage?

Like I said, there's still no source showing she generated 700 watts. That's just an assumption on your part.

Also track cyclists can generate 2100 to 2300 watts max, so 700 watts is a small fraction of that, and no one has any evidence she produced that much power to begin with.

So where is the evidence she generated a RECORDED 700 watts peak, and for how long? Several of you have made this claim now without any citation or proof.
