winter solstice

"If you don't pay for the service, you are the product ..."
So what? Funny thing indeed is I'm getting advertisements for the kind of products I've already bought...

Well we made it through another trip around the sun, anyway. The English Heritage group is streaming the winter solstice live since no one can go there this year. I'd like to see it again, but apparently it's only on Facepalm. For those who can tolerate that, enjoy.
Edit . Found a you tube link. About 3am EST.
I found experiencing it from my warm bed while asleep was just as fulfilling 🙃

Yeah, had to turn the lights on the bike coming home from the grocery Friday @ 4:30 PM.
Tried to see the Saturn -Jupiter conjunction last night. Its been cloudy or raining @ 9 PM for 5 days. Welcome to winter. Snowed 3 times last week but didn't stick.
Been enjoying Christmas music on the radio. & fortunately WUOL doesn't play Brenda Lee or the Beatles fan club greeting/mashup either one. I stopped listening to pop WAKY about 12/14.

We had the sunset in Poland's Mazovia at 15:25 today. I rode for shopping at daytime and was returning with full lighting at night with 28.3 kg (62 lb) of groceries. How good my nearest shopping mall is fairly close...

You have nearly 2 hours less daylight today than we will! My wife worked north of Fairbanks Alaska for several summers. She says they're in total darkness now. 😕

Tim, I used to work in Norway, also on Winters... A tragedy. Not the polar night but almost. On contrary, almost no night during summers, for example in Oslo.

I used to take summer fishing trips into southern Alaska. It deserves the name "Land of the Midnight Sun" as well!

You could leave off the "for six months" part ... but the older I get the more Pagan and less Presbyterian I become. I think I could be happy with just 4 Holidays per year...the solstice and the equinox haven't been ruined yet ...
On the plus side, we´re half way thru the cabin fever zone. Unfortunately this year it began back in March. I´m trying to cope by
cutting paper dolls & watching tropical travelogues on Utube. I´m assuming the sun is still there, but I´ve seen little evidence
to confirm the fact. Apparently we´ll now be getting another stimulus check of $600,(woohoo) This is like trying to jump start
a car that´s out of gas, but hey, it´s a down payment on an ebike.🤪

I don't want to sound smug, because I know I'm just very, very fortunate, but i wish the checks were only going to those who actually need them so they could have been more substantial. Plenty of folks are doing just fine - still employed in good paying jobs, able to work from home, retired and receiving sufficient income, etc. I know not everyone, but plenty of people.

I know I can donate to charity, but it would have been nice if our Congress had done the intelligent, targeted thing that would have been most helpful to those most in need (and also helped them spend money in the economy)...

At any rate, Happy Solstice! Next year will be better!

Actually I am especially concerned about renters and landlords in all this. Behind on both mortgages and rents and lots of evictions looming at year end, we don't exactly need more folks homeless in a pandemic.

I saw the planatery conjunction! Clouds cleared today. About 1830 EST I saw 2 bright objects about a finger above the horizon SW. Arctan(4"/30")=3.8 deg above horizon. Bright planet to left was as bright as an airplane going north from the airport. Planet to right was about half as bright. I suppose the bright one is Jupiter. the dim one Saturn. Pity both pairs of binoculars were stolen in September.

Yeah I put my binoculars on them last night. Pretty cool. They were so close together I could not really distinguish the two by naked eye. I think tonight they are supposed to be even closer but now we have clouds to the west.

Only happens about once in 800 years IIRC ... that's close enough to see without a scope. 👍I have never seen Saturn even with a scope but Jupiter is awesome.

Just got back from viewing the 'great conjunction'. Beautiful sunset. The light cloud cover broke just as twilight was fading revealing the 'twins'. My wife saw then first with just her glasses on. Very nice with our binoculars through couldn't make out Saturn's rings. Worth the short drive.
