Why Container Ships Can’t Sail Around the California Ports Bottleneck

But they already get good enough pay sitting at home doing nothing. Why would anyone work these days ??
But they don't. No more extra money. Truck drivers were quitting well before Covid hit.

But that article says: “Early leaving has become a huge problem within the trucking industry, with 35% of drivers quitting their jobs within the first 90 days of employment.”

Which means they just aren’t adapted to trucking perhaps. You don’t spend $10,000 getting a CDL and then wimping out because you can’t get the highest paying job from the start. I would think it’s more that they didn’t understand the demands.

Something like 33% of people quit jobs in the first 90 days anyways:

It’s about the same situation for commercial pilots too. and they pay something like $100,000 in the beginning to get basic certification. Then suddenly they find out they have to be on the flight deck with no external distractions like their iPhones for an extended period more than a couple of hours. and -then- they don’t show up for work. Sissy culture 🤣.

Or maybe these types are all flat out lazy from the get-go ?

Sissy test #1
Take your lightly loaded 40k lb rig for a test drive in ice and snow conditions. Assuming you're good to go there, try navigating through a place like Chicago during the rush hour. Now realize you are going to be doing this every day for weeks/months on end. Who cares about the money if you don't have time to relax/spend it?

Sissy test#2
You're an airline "heavy" pilot, responsible for hundreds of lives from the time they enter the door of the plane until they exit, all with today's environment in mind. Everything the truck driver is concerned with is in play here as well. It's not so much what this position cost you financially, it's about the years of training, as well as ongoing training, certifications and recertifications you have wrapped up in this career!

Both of these guys are a pretty special breed. I've known both types well most of my life. They have nerves of steel.

And they're 1 mistake away from death whenever they're on duty. Both of these guys will be the first to arrive at any accident they're involved in..... their fault or not!

Not for me....

Actually the problem is a bit bigger.

From a personal standpoint, in the late 1980's and early 1990's I figured out that the most expensive thing I did was have a job. If I didn't work, or at least didn't work full time, a lot of my other expenses basically evaporated and I found myself with a lot of time and energy to do the things I loved. So it all worked out.

When I finally did go back to work full time, I went in with the attitude that I wasn't ever going to accept a paycheck in any year starting with the number 2. I met that goal. However, it meant playing by different rules and setting different goals. Which I did.

What appears to be happening right now is a lot of people are figuring out what I figured out in 1989. Heaven help us.

That’s why doing what you love is the most important thing when you decide on a career. Mostly I’ve been fortunate to manage that.
I ran a pretty good sized marina for a couple of seasons (250 slips plus dry storage). I really enjoyed the work and did well with it. I left it because when it was nicest out weather wise, when I wanted to go play, is when I was busiest. No time to go play on my boat!

Lesson learned, hobbies and jobs don't mix well. Not for long anyway!

It's a huge mess that keeps compounding, for example some companies that couldn't find shipping containers to rent/loan made a choice to buy their own to solve the issue adding alot of cost to their shipping.
Then their containers end up sitting on the water for months once they get to the coast. So they need to place another order and their purchased containers do them no good because they are so long from being back in China for the next order. Makes a case for new ports with dedicated distribution centers for North America, just in time inventory is a thing of the past as a viable means of supply.

There is also a shortage of batteries and Lithium, not good for the Ebike industry.

Boomers are aging out of the workforce, yet we remain consumers of goods and services. Basically this is a natural deflation of our workforce. We need young immigrants.

Let us also realize that the economic system most of the world runs on - - the endlessly increasing exploitation of natural resources and human resources to produce more and more products and services faster and faster, to be consumed in increasing numbers by people who don't actually need them and must be taught by advertising that everything they have or are is not good enough (to stimulate demand for new and more), along with endless credit to purchase more of it (because in order to lower the prices, wages have been reduced and reduced such that workers cannot actually afford to to buy all this stuff...) - - well, all in all, it is the economy of a tumor. It only stops when there are no more resources left to consume.

Also, all this frenetic human activity is the direct cause of the climate emergency, and it seems as though Mother Nature along with the pandemic, is telling us all to slow down. She says, "Basta!!"

California made it illegal for older trucks to enter the state.. So they have a shortage of actual trucks that are approved for in state travel.

Secondary problem

The containers that are sitting are products that were ordered but because of the down turn in the economy (inflationary) the request for said products is not as it was or will be (if ever at this rate).

So the containers sit until old stock is gone and then they will bring in the new stock.. but because of inflation (cost of good, gas, energy and so on ) and then add on the truck shortage (approved for travel in california(CARB?))

It wont be fixed anytime soon with these issues.

Sitting at home waiting for $Trillions more dollars in handouts?
You can't have it both ways. If you think these jobs should be held by somebody already here, but those people are sitting around waiting for more handouts, who should we turn to? Those that are ready and willing, or those looking for more handouts? Your call. Which make more sense to a viable answer?

I think what is happening is that a lot of jobs that were thankless, poorly compensated, and all in all not that great before the pandemic have became completely unbearable during the pandemic.

This isn't just low-paying jobs like food service and grocery store workers who now, with their limited pay and authority also have to deal with grown adults throwing temper tantrums about wearing a mask and often being physically threatened as well. It also includes professionals like teachers, nurses, and flight attendants who also are facing torrents of abuse.

No amount of compensation is worth being treated like crap.

Good question. The jobs are there. Where are these workers?
Sitting home waiting for employers to pay more $$$. Unless you're in a union you have no bargaining rights. Sitting home is their way of bargaining. Interestingly Fed unemployment aide ran out Sept 4th yet some still think it's being paid.

Stop the handouts and they’ll go to work. The only message they get from the current administration is how they’re going to get $3.5T more in entitlements. So they’re waiting.

People have gotten rude.. Social media has given everyone a platform to voice their opinions... Not that it matters but they voice anyways and have a expanded self importance.. I dont really care what others think.

Anyways.. The ports are loaded and they are parking containers because they dont need them.. Shipping to california doesnt fix the problem as they dont have enough CARB compliant trucks to move the containers.. Hire all the guy or work the ports 24hrs a day and more man power.. What good will any of it do if they cant move the containers past the state line?

Simple fix... Roll back the Carb rules and let Commerce do its thing. Next issue like I said is supply and demand.. Demand was high when they ordered 6-8 months ago... Now not so much.. so the containers will sit anyway.

Hard for people to admit they are wrong on so many levels.. easier to teach them a lie and they will run with it. Cant think of the writer who wrote that (paraphrased).

Read this and understand

Hi guys! This is a reminder that politics does not belong here. This thread is about the issue we're dealing with due to the ramifications of covid worldwide, however, it is not a place to discuss masks, vaccinations, or anything related to covid itself. Let's get back on topic, please. Thank you!
