Verve+ Dropped Chain

My wife was riding her 2019 Verve+ today when the chain dropped just as she was starting off from a stop. It's really jammed in there and I'll probably end up taking it to the LBS since it's due for service anyway (good thing I put the rack on the car when I drove to the "rescue"). But I can't figure out how it might have happened since it's unusual to me for a chain to drop on a single chainring bike. Any ideas why it happened? Is it a known problem?

It could be as simple as a twig or something got stuck briefly in there. How long since you replaced the chain ,and front ring?
 
I have a Verve + 3, and the chain has dropped off the drive ring to the inside two or three times , usually when I downshifted too many low gears going up a short incline. It really, really gets jammed in there. I have been unable to extract it a couple of times without breaking the chain at the quick link, pulling it through and reconnecting. Fortunately I have the tools onboard to deal with chain issues. But it’s a tedious, dirty job on a trail. I should note that I have permanently removed the chain guard, otherwise the job would be virtually impossible outside a shop.

I ride a Trek Super Commuter and had the same issue. I solved it by having my shop secure a large washer (metal ring) to the inside of the chain guard to fill that empty space.
The chain has never dropped again in probably 30,000 miles!

Does the chain have a quick-link as delivered? I looked briefly and didn't see one, but at that point it was just easier to load the bike on the rack and bring it home. I have the tools for the job as well as a chain breaker if there is currently no quick link, but would also like some advice from the LBS on how to prevent this since we are sometimes quite a long way from home or our vehicle.

Hers dropped off the the inside, which I think is different from your case maybe. On a couple of my old road bikes I was able to install a little gizmo called a "chain catcher". Maybe they can install something along that line. I'm more familiar with this problem on my road bikes with two or three chainrings and a front derailleur but never heard of in on a 1x setup (I thought that was a big advantage of going 1x).

Mine was also dropping on the inside. My fix fills the gap, it is foolproof.

I must be missing something. From your photos it looks like the washer is between the chainring and guard, which is to the outside of the sprocket. Am I looking at the wrong detail?

Ooops, you are right.
My chain would drop to the right of the sprocket into a small gap, the washer filled that gap.
