US proposes 25% tariff on China-made e-bikes

Very disturbing situation, particularly if you understand that the 25% tariff ends up being much more due to costs charged by customs processors to collect the tariff. This is something our shop has already experienced when importing some items from China. This article does not make it clear what tariff would be levied on components of electric bikes or kits.

The whole bike industry has remained flat with little to no growth over last year or in some categories, lost sales, with the largest & fastest growing category being electric bikes. With that said, the numbers from ebike sales & imports is still very small compared to the non-electric mountain bike & city bike categories.

My opinion is this is just negotiating tactics. I wouldn't worry too much yet. China has been stealing american technology zero consequences for years, even decades. This is an attempt to change that I believe.
