My wife and I bought comfort style bikes about 7 years ago, only put about 77 miles on them, and for the past many years they have just been taking up space in the garage. Some weeks back we were at the beach with friends and decided to rent ebikes for the day. We rode them on the Bob Jones bike path and up a mountain road to a winery for some wine tasting. They were a blast and all of us decided we had to purchase ebikes. I began researching all the various ebikes available and the different options and styles. My wife and I visited the local bike shops and expanded our search to day trips down to the LA area and further. After much online research, numerous bike shop visits, test rides of many different bikes, I found the right bike for me. I went back to my LBS even though I had already looked there and not seen anything I wanted, but this time there was a new bike on the floor. A Specialized Como 4.0 step over in matte charcoal grey. It is a MY2020, with the new Turbo Connect Display (TCD) that works with the Mission Control app. I love this bike! My wife is still trying to decide between a Townie Go!, an Elby, or possibly a step-thru Como 4.0. Our LBS has ordered a step-thru Como 4.0 for her to try but it is only available in a lighter grey color and she wants something in a bright color. We will see what she ends up with.
Our intention is to get out and ride around town and on the bike paths, take them over to the coast and explore the area while doing a little wine tasting, and also take the ebikes with us when we travel with our 5th wheel rv. In researching racks for the ebikes, I became aware that most racks are not designed to be used on a towable rv. Also the choices are limited for bikes that are step thru. I eventually found a rack from 1UP USA that is rated for use on a 5th wheel, can hold two ebikes up to 75lbs. each, and folds up when not carrying bikes. It was not cheap, but it works great. Mine is the 2" Super Duty model.
I had not really considered using my ebike as a commuter. I teach high school Computer Science and live 5 miles from work. I am enjoying riding the Como to work and the exercise I get vs. driving. Now I am planning to commute on the Como as often as possible. This is a great website and forum with a wealth of information, I am happy to be here.
Update: My wife decided that the Elby was the best choice for her. Just picked it up yesterday. Now we need this rain to stop so we can get out and enjoy our ebikes!
