Tires for R&M Roadster Touring HS

Just picked up a R&M Roadster Touring HS from the fantastic guys at Propel (thanks Lee, Zen and crew) for my daily 13 mile commute from Brooklyn to the Bronx. As expected, caught a flat on the maiden ride!!

The Roadster comes stock with Schwalbe G-Ones (28x1.5 or 700x38c). Great tires but not great for New York City and it's potholes and road debris. I'm looking to swap them out for possibly wider tires (would need to fit under the fenders) but def ones with better puncture resistance - like the Marathon Plus (which I ran on my Crosscheck and loved). Might 700x45c's work? Would love to hear from some more experienced ebike commuters about possible sizing and recommendations for tires!!

Thanks all!!

Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres have many devoted followers: I'm one of them.

I swapped the 50-622 Schwalbe Big Ben tyres that came with my first ebike for 47-622 Marathon Pluses after the front tyre flatted - punctured (despite Mr Tuffy liner) and then went down (despite Slime). The new tyres were a tight fit between the stays even though they were nominally narrower.

You can find the range here: Schwalbe Marathon Plus . Widths for 622 rims range from a narrow 25 mm to a wide 47 mm (with no 45 mm).

37-622 would seem to be the appropriate size for your Roadster. Maybe 40-622 but I doubt 47-622. It depends on clearances and that is why Propel's expertise and experience should be sought.

Be careful going too big. If a stone or debris gets caught between the fender and tire, bad things can happen.

How do you like your Roadster? I took delivery of one 2 or 3 weeks ago and have been commuting on it every day. Could not be happier. And coming from me who second guesses decisions regularly, that's saying something. I find the Roadster's ride and handling to be delightful. Coming from a 1000 watt BBS-HD mid-drive, I was not expecting to be impressed with the power, but the Roadster HS has plenty of zip. I road the old bike last weekend and it felt like a tank in comparison.

Point take re. stone or debris... The great crew at Propel were able to get the marathon plus 47's on with some work. With a near 30 mile round trip from Brooklyn to the Bronx the Marathon Pluses have added a degree of confidence - not only in the flat department but also with handling.

I'm having an amazing time on the Roadster and like you, doubt that I could be much happier. In fact, I'm about to give up my Honda 919 and old Jeep Cherokee to finance some winter riding geaer and figure out how to ride this thing year round. It's not a 1000cc motorcycle, but got plenty of power and speed, super responsive and agile. I ride the bike purely for commuting and have cut my total commute time from 2+ hours(by car/train) to 90 -100 minutes!!
