The transition

I was on a car trip over the most beautiful places of England and Wales and think it was a big mistake. Because driving in the UK is no fun.
I got rid of the car in Poland and use trains instead but also understand the public transport in the UK is very expensive.

Well it begins, Europe..ie the EU is dropping US tech for digital 'soveriegnty'.
Google has been dropped as the search engine for Qwant and they will be dropping mircroslop office and everything eventually.
Of course I trust the EU even less..but hey ho.

Not when you have a free pass at 60 :)
Only local, but yes its stupidly expensive unless you can plan ahead with incredible accuracy and gain god like knowledge of every single facet of savers, off peaks and singlecreturn glitches.

Our company dropped Google and Dropbox. Not because of any political reasons but why should you pay if you use Synology?

It is better than it is in Poland. We get a discount over 60 but not the free pass :)
Its bus and train, I can actually get to Chester on it, maybe a 30m radius overall.
Im sure it wont last long, I use it to take the bike up the coast, but theres no way I would pay.
Its 8.50 single to Southport and thats just 12 miles.
I can easily get there and back twice in diesel in the van for that.
Ive already paid up front for everything else and if theres three of us thats door to door for about 70p each.

Yes, Im saying we need a button we press to keep the car below 20, its ridiculous to be monitoring by endless off road glances.
I had this argument with my mate Gary in Wales, hes like Chris just keep it at 20, is it that difficult.
Im watching him drive in a 20 minutes later.
Im like, Gary youre doing 26.

I got three points for 24

20 to 24 in my van is a movement barely more than the width of the needle
fair enough! I kept drifting over 20mph last trip to Wales, it is hard to keep under.

Just to put the things in the right perspective.
It is a little above 1 quid for a train trip to Warsaw (15 miles) with the 35% senior citizen discount on Mazovian Railways or GBP 1.40 for Fast Urban Train.
It is four pounds for a Mazovian Railways 1 1/2 hour trip, no discount (a senior citizen gets the 35% discount).
Bike transport is free.

It is 24 British Pounds for a 203 mile Intercity trip including the bike ticket. FOR TWO PEOPLE!

Convince me a car trip would be any cheaper in Poland :)

It is for TWO people, TWO bikes! 24 quids!

You can get cheap tickets, but its so convoluted, with multiple operators and overlapping constrictions that anyone deciding to do the right thing and ditch the car gives up after five minutes.

Trains are only 2% of journeys in the UK and we invented the freakin things..

This sketch sums it up.

By "buses" they mean a long distance coach.

With some exceptions, you have to pay to a specific operator in Poland. (The exception could be mutual honouring tickets between SKM and Mazovian Railways in the Warsaw Zone 1 and 2). However, whenever there's a need, an app can be created. Brands such as SkyCash, jakdojade or Koleo all have agreements with all the operators, and it also extends beyond just the public transportation/railways for SkyCash. You either top up your account in the app or use BLIK, which is a unique Polish system for instant payment from any bank. These apps also have timetables for any railway operator in Poland.

However, the specific operators have their own apps and websites as well. I prefer:
  • Checking the connections and cyclist seat availability for long haul in the Intercity website
  • Do the commute planning in jakdojade ("how do I get there")
  • Buy the local tickets in SkyCash
  • But buy the long haul tickets with Intercity. The latter ensures I will certainly get a seat/bike space and all applicable discounts.

It took Poland some time to get to that level.

In August 2023, I got to Gdańsk with an Intercity train. The next step was to get to Gdańsk Airport to collect @Brix. I hadn't done my research beforehand. As I knew it took a city bus ages to get to the airport, I took a taxi. It took ages and cost a lot. Only when I picked up my gf, I started reading the apps. Turned out, the railway operator was Polregio, offering a very fast and inexpensive connection back to Gdańsk but Gdańsk Wrzeszcz (a hub). The next step was just to get on Gdańsk SKM (the Fast Urban Train). All very fast and inexpensive. One always learns...

The trip back to the airport was so easy!

View attachment 210963If you see hostility problems, consider this as a potential cause; lycra or entitled ebike riders.
By far the majority of Lycra d_bags in my area are on high end naturally aspirated road bikes. I believe the permission to close proximity high speed pass, cut off and block is given to them with their purchase receipt... Along with their color matching race bike attire. 🙃

I continue to count my blessings I live in the Heartland; I don't see d'bag conflicts at all. The only thing I would like to see change is getting Class 2s off the MUP.

The ever-fashionable roadie hate is entitlement, but not generally on the part of the road cyclist. Its motorists sense of entitlement to drive without even a minor inconvenience, ever.
I'll say it again and again. If you think it is okay (or even cute and funny) to joke about harming or killing people because they caused you a short delay you are seriously messed up. And should not be allowed to operate any motorized vehicle under any circumstances until your issues are resolved in a healthy fashion.

There are multiple ways to look at this. I ride bikes the way I'd prefer bikes to be riden around me when I am driving. The advantage of being both a rider and driver.
