Stomer self maintenance?

I live in the Bahamas and was thinking of importing a Stromer for commuting to work, but I'm worried that there is no dealer support and I might not be able to keep the bike maintained properly. There aren't any ebike dealers on the whole island either. Does anyone perform their own regular maintenance on their Stromer bike?

Outside of the motor, display, controller, and battery all the regular maintenance on the bike can be done my any bike mechanic. What I suggest is that if you have a good working relationship with a local bike shop you inquire as to whether they would be willing to work with you and Stromer support to troubleshoot and solve any electronic problems. Stromer support is very supportive and you might want to give them a call and inquire....Perhaps they would even be willing to let the bike shop download a service manual. Worth a shot at least.

Stromers are really reliable but you live in a salt laden area. Not sure if it's a great place for electrical system.

You will find their parts are proprietary and expensive.

Have you thought about buying an ebike kit and installing it on your bike? Those kits are a lot easier to wrk on and can take a lot of different sources.

Since it s flat and distances aren't great you should be able to find something with a geared hub motor.

Thanks for the suggestions "86 and still kicking" and JoePah, I'll try to see if the bike shop in town can work with me to try to maintain a Stormer and if not I'll look at bike kits. I appreciate the help either way.

Couldn't you get Stromer service in Miami?

I'd have to fly it back to Miami for service, which brings up another question, has anyone actually been able to transport their e-bikes on the plane, I understand the big batteries are not allowed on flights?

You can fly with the bike but not the battery. Batteries are limited to 160 watt hours. You can have three 160 Wh batteries as carry on. Delta and United.

Maybe the Sondors ebike Cort recently reviewed here: less proprietary parts and much cheaper so if the salt air just destroys it there is less monetary risk.
