Sram twist shifter controls?

Hey Guys
I have Sram twist shifters on my 22009 Montague "Old Blue",
3 x 8 cluster = 24 spds.

It has become very hard to shift and I have lost a couple of gears now etc.

I am sure with all the ultra fine dust around here, that these twist shifters are gummed/dried up and need cleaned/lubed. They have been stored in the rear seat of a Cessna 180 Sky Wagon since 2009 and nothing has been done to them.

I have changed out all the rubber items and cleaned/lubed most all that needed it, installed a 100mm suspension front forks, new tires/tubes/Flat out in everything .

Slowly getting it back into as close as possible to OEM condition.
I really like this bike, it is a blast to ride around the valley's flat gravel roads, BUT,
I'll install a DM02 motor/48v -17.5a battery for the hills....

Can these shifters/cables be cleaned/lubed without any problems?
Or should I change them out for something newer?

Your thoughts or suggestions...
Tia

Replace inner and outer cables and open up the shifters

Ok video hoe to work on those shifters

As a mechanic, I grew to hate all SRAM twist shifters. Compared to other types of shifters, a major pain to work on.

I especially hated the little bent metal clip which is essential to operation but always seems to fall out.

If they are as ergonomic to you as twist shifters, I'd take the opportunity to switch to trigger shifters, as they are much more reliable and still easy to shift.

I would flush out the shifters with rust protectant, and replace both sets of inner wires and housings with lined housings from Sram or Shimano. Work everything in for 5 minutes or so of shifting. If it's not like buttah by then, you have bigger problems, but that money is not wasted.

With investing, in my opinion, in a DM02 it is worth it for a major drive train upgrade. The left shifter will go anyway. I would look into a Box 4, 8, 11-42. The 8-speed is wide and robust. It has a powerful clutch on the derailleur and you will be down to 1:1 for huge climbs. A quality 48V 10.5 or even 7Ah is all you will ever need. This motor is highly efficient if you are pedaling.

Thanks Guys
My thoughts were that I should upgrade the shifter,
I kind'a figure, I would lose the 3 gear shifter, when converting this bike, but I do have a question.

Can or will I be able to use the wide/narrow chain with the new ring gear, 11/42 and 8 speeds?
I have this type of chain on both of my off road trail bikes and have NO problems with it so far.

Thanks Ped, for the information, I'll do some reading...
I have never heard of this brand name before.

wide/narrow chain
Yes, use a normal 8-speed chain. And use the standard 10mm offset 42-t steel DM02 chainring to bring in the chain-line in to hit first gear. I am 35 miles north of the Golden Gate. Look me up on Maps and I can help you to order parts and give individual support before, during, and after. The bike I am working on is a beautiful bride of Frankenstein. It is almost done; just needs Marathon 365's, 50-622's today. The starter bike looked like this green one. Now it has a stem riser and backswept bar, comfy saddle, and a DM02.

Update: I dropped-off the bike to my friend's garage with the conspiratorial help of his wife, a H.S. languages teacher Jennifer. He is an Electrician. We covered it in a blanket for him to discover on his own. A whippy green dropbar skinny tire gravel bike is now effing bad-azz. I had it to 28 on a test run at mid-level. I do not want to crash over 24, 34 Kph. That means broken bones, with a long recovery. Going along at 18 is fine for most rides, 28 Kph. Its limit is 50 Kph. No throttle, pedal torque sensor only. And fully user programable. The white box is the charger.

@stompandgo, here is the black box. I can adjust the degrees of angle of kick-in and feel of the torque sensor millivolts, and everything, like milliseconds of overrun for smoothness. Download to expertly critically review me if I am F.O.Shite. You can't just do that on other bikes. Specialized? His bike is so tuned, thoroughly refined, it kicks the butts of $10,000 bikes from stores. If I am Full of It. Call me out.
