Spooked by recent recalls - Are these battery charging cabinets worth the investment?

Thanks for sharing that UL search site. I actually went ahead and checked a few other e-bike brands that my family, friends, and neighbors own, and couldn't find a single one in the database. Guess you really do get what you pay for. It seems like the 'UL' certification sellers claim and the real, legitimate UL are two completely different things. I’m honestly baffled as to why platforms like Amazon accept these so-called UL2849 certifications and let these e-bikes be listed and sold.

With gas prices up and the weather warming up, we're riding way more than in the winter. I might have to go 'spread some anxiety' to my neighbors now... I know, I'm terrible! 😈 But on a serious note, I'm planning to reach out to a few of them to see if we can go in together on a safe charging cabinet. If we split the cost and share it, it makes a lot more sense for everyone. Lol.

I did ask, and they actually sent me a UL2849 report. It looks legit on paper, but when I search for its brand name on the UL site, it shows up nowhere.
I think it better to search cert# as a public company name can be different than their actual or there can be a parent company with a few brands
Or they're just full of s*it...

An alternative to a $600 charging container might be a couple of these Batt-Safe boxes:

That looks like a good idea. I wish it was bigger though.

You can charge and store up to a 2pc 6S 5000mAh equivalent (222Wh) safely inside the BAT-SAFE.

Charging space: 9.5*6.5*4 inch / 240*165*102mm

Outer dimensions: 12*9*7 inch / 305*230*178mm

Weight: 4lbs / 1.85kg

Lithium fires generate their own oxidizer, so CO2 has little effect.

A CO2 extinguisher isn't used to smother a lithium fire, it's used to remove the heat.

Place them over a large bucket of water suspended by cardboard.

That's what I'm gunna do.

The only way to stop a lithium fire is to remove the heat.

Watch the last three minutes of this video.
I trust this guys opinion.
He's been blowing up batteries for Decades.😁

I'm gunna start charging my batteries in the bathroom sitting on a cardboard box above the tub full of water.😁

Pics or yer lyin

Yeah that's me lyin.
I don't wanna accidentally soak my battery.

I've decided to sleep with my battery instead.
If anything should go wrong while I'm sleeping and charging at the same time, I should notice and wake up in time to piss on the battery before it Grenades. 😁

I worked in a warehouse in the mid 80's and we used to do a lot of dumb s*it.

We would spray the CO2 fire extinguisher directly onto our work gloves and made powdered dry ice on the glove.

One guy came to work complaining how his car door got dented in a parking lot, so another guy sprayed the CO2 on his glove, wiped it on the dent, and the door Popped right back into shape.
No need to drill a hole through the door to pull it out, or buy suction cups.

And with that being said, I am going to buy a proper CO2🧯

Mine is the crappy ABC kind that just makes a Fricken Mess.

If my batteries ever start to start on fire, I'm gunna get all Up Close and Personal and Hose It Down Good, till it's all covered in artificial snow ❄️ 🙃 😅

If the fire is so far gone that I can't get Up Close and Personal, then it's time to run and call the fire department. 😁

And there's no clean up after using the CO2🧯

It just sublimates into thin air.😁

So I did some research,..

A CO2🧯is Fricken expensive!!
My messy ABC🧯is only forty bucks.

And a CO2🧯is only good for B and C fires,..

I had a 2"x4" handy as an example.
I would use two thin strips of wood to support the battery sideways over the tub.

So, say I wake up to the smoke alarm going off to find my battery on fire above the tub, and it hasn't fallen into the water yet, so I hose it down Real Good with my CO2🧯

I would extinguish my battery fire by covering it with snow, but the wooden strips would just keep burning 🔥???? 🤔

That makes no damn sense to me ??!@

I guess I gotta suspend the battery by the power cords on the charger to be able to put out the Entire Fire if I ever need to use the CO2🧯for a Bathroom Battery fire??

Seriously though.
I'm gunna waste $568 and buy myself a ten pound lithium fire putter outter.

Still don't think co2 will work. It will displace oxygen in the air of a typical fire but it won't be able to do the same for a battery fire that is continually producing oxygen

It has nothing to do with oxygen production or smothering the fire.
I would use it to remove heat.

We weren't stupid enough to make "snow" on our bare hands at work.

Third degree burns in a micro second.
The "snow" sticks to the skin and it's hard to shake it off.

Watch the last 3 minutes of that video.
He's dealt with lithium fire batteries personally, many times.
Sometimes on purpose.
He's got skin in the game, maybe even some real skin from playing with CO2🧯's 😁

F-It,..
I'm removing the horn
I wanna spray the liquid

CO2 would actually make the most efficient and effective refrigerant but it doesn't like to be a liquid and it would clog up the compressor.

Einstein had his hand in refrigeration after people were killed when the ammonia leaked out of one of the first refrigeration units.

Freon works well but we damn near wrecked the ozone layer.

I recharged my car's AC with R-134 that is made from propane that has been treated to raise the ignition point.

You can recharge the AC on your car with propane, but any leaks are Explosive.

I guess it's just the fancy container that's expensive?

Refills are cheap.
I can afford to do lots of liquid CO2 experiments.
I got all kinds of old lithium cells to start on fire. 😁

@Chargeride
I remember when you asked if you could write a book about me, and I said yes as long as I don't have type it all out for you because I type with one finger on my smartphone and it would take me Fer Fricken Ever.

Well,..
I still type with one finger, but I just managed to figure out how to cut and paste a post from my Mazda forum from 13 years ago.

"OK,... I have to pipe up on this one,...

I agree with you completely that a sealed system will not ignite but if there is liquid gas leaking around the top of the sender unit, that can certainly ignite. Even a spark inside a sealed gas tank can ignite if there is air (O2) in the tank and there always is. But I believe the whole gas danger thing is over rated. If you're working on those screws and you can't smell gas (mine isn't leaking yet so I'm gonna do mine before it does) then I really don't think there is a snowball's chance in hell of any kind of explosion and I'm gonna prove it by using my Dremel tool when I do mine. (just to be an a$$)
My friends wife's Grandfather delivered gas,... smoking cigarettes while standing right beside the big hose filling the underground tank. He was fine, for decades, then one day it all went bad,...RIP. I had friends that rinsed out their dirt bikes sponge air filters in gas smoking the whole time, flicking the ashes in the gas then putting out the cigarette in the gas.
I was working on a gas leak on my 85 626,... I lifted up the rear end almost two feet then detached the filler and filler vent tubes and tipped the tank down a foot to get access to the weld around the vent fitting where it was leaking. I was told everything is safe if there is no spark or open flame so a soldering gun is fine. (except for the sparking in the switch for my Weller soldering gun so I put an elastic band on the trigger to hold it on). It was kinda working except I couldn't get enough heat to melt the solder at the weld spot,... So I was figuring that the whole gas explosion thing was way over rated an decided to open the garage door (it was winter), cool the place down, air it out and then give go with my Bensomatic micro torch.
I got it lite and got the flame about 8" away from the fitting and POOF,... I jumped back two feet then stared at a 12" blue flame jetting straight out horizontally from the 2" filler fitting. It was making a serious jetting sound as it sucked air in the vent fitting to feed the jet blast. I just sat there in the snow three feet away like a deer caught in the headlights with my mouth and eyes wide open and just waited to see what was gonna happen next. Then the flame slowed down and shrunk until it was right at the fitting,.. then another small puff and the flame was now inside my tank,... the whole inside of my tank was on fire and was giving off a very pretty orange glow that shone out the filler neck. I figured it was about time to do some thing,.. so I reached behind me and scooped two hand fulls of snow and made a snow ball to plug the filler neck which I figured would be pretty hot,... I jammed it in there sealing the end with my palm and used my other thumb to plug the filler vent,... Then I turned my head away, pinched my eyes shut and waited,... I may have prayed but I don't recall,... After what felt like ten minutes but was probably about three seconds, I heard my final poof and the fire was dead.
I even managed to get the snowball out and put in some gas line antifreeze then blew through the vent to blow all the black smoke out of the tank. So I salvaged my tank and the 1/3 tank of gas and finished up my soldering with the Weller soldering gun.
The really stupid thing was that I had a fire extinguisher about 4 feet away,... I don't know if I forgot or if I was seriously trying not to waste all that gas and the tank,... I dunno,... I tend to learn the hard way,... I'm just lucky I've lived through each of my life lessons.
I'm pretty sure the addition of ethanol to gas changed the game quite a bit. I think that's why the flame was blue at first, just the alcohol vapors."

This is that car,..
Not a Single Scorch mark on it anywhere.
Lots rust and dirt though.
I got $425 for it as is.😁
