My local Specialized shop and Specialized online have the Extender Battery, cable and y-cable on sale. The battery was $336. Cables were around $45.

makes me wonder if the next model might have a different approach????
I do not think so. The price of the SL Range Extender in Europe is stiff and high. I guess the U.S. has got an excessive stock of REs and that's it.

I wouldn't be surprised and would hope next generation shows some significant improvements. However the SL versions are still relatively new (3-4 years?) so I think they will be around at least a couple more years. I wouldn't be surprised to find steeper discounts on unsold SL bikes and range extenders once it is clear they are being replaced.

But I think the current discounts are a result of post Covid supply catching up and exceeding current demand. A quick review of the website does show every SL bike (Creo, Vado, Como) is also discounted whereas the full power versions of the Como and Vado are not. All the IGH models are also discounted. Besides the Kenovo and Levo SL versions being discounted - most of the othe EMTB's are also discounted. Tero's and Tero X are not. The IGH and full power Levo/Kenovo discount support the theory that supply has exceeded demand for the discounted models.

Specialized normally replaces model each 3 year, so it about the Creo get an update. Looking at other similar bikes on the market, there is still little to compare with the Creo. I did like the look of the TQ motor fitted so a few new bikes, but the range is only quoted as 60 miles and other motors and coming in the same. Mavic are also developing a motor which look really good, but that is years off yet. A new SL motor will likely be lighter, more efficient and quieter. Not even seen any rumours yet......
