Radmini with 11-28 freewheel

Hi all, just wanted to give a quick report on the new freewheel on the Radmini. I went on a 13 mile ride, and for the first time was able to use pedal assist efficiently... could pedal and help at 20mph speeds quite well. On a bike trail with periodic slowdowns for crossing streets or respectfully navigating around pedestrians I maintained an average speed of 17mph without getting sweaty. Rough calculations after the ride, using my kill-a-watt indicated a 29 mile range, extrapolated. On the stock freewheel, using throttle only, with pedaling only on hills I was getting estimated ranges of 23 or so. Before the new freewheel I did not use pedal assist above 15mph, so this opens up a lot of possibilities. Also, it just felt good and was fun and felt natural. I only used PA 4 and 5 on this ride. I was a pedal assist skeptic but with the proper gearing it works great. PA also makes it easier to take advantage of downhills; with throttle I tended to keep it on full, but you can't "feel" the ride as much. It was a pain to install, but worth it for the long run if you can spare the hassle of the one-time install and $30. I know the Radrover riders have already figured this out. Happy riding everyone.

Awesome report @mbirds! My 11-32 casette is going on my Radrover Friday. Please keep us posted on how it works for you long-term!

Interesting that you got a flat so quickly. I saw another youtuber having a flat on his fat tire Radrover early on also. I guess it the hazards of having such a large contact area. I went ahead and put some Slime into my Radrover tires after seeing this.

As a comparison, I rode road bikes for over 10 years and had maybe just a handful of flats all that time. And rode mountain bikes for maybe 5 of those years didn't get a single flat.

I've had my share of flats on regular bikes, but yes... I attribute it to the garbage innertubes supplied with the radmini, "meh" tires, and bad luck with sharp gravel. Also, I may have been riding with too much pressure, I had the stock tires at max pressure when it happened. I'm more confident with the new rubber on the bike.

@walawn, thank you for the kind words.

@thatdude902 That's exactly the reason I'm getting heavy duty down hill tubes installed in my Radrover on Friday, and along with the excellent Maxxis tires I purchased, should really be a step up from what comes on the bike from the factory. @mbirds you are very welcome
