Pre-Owned E-Bikes

Are there stores that sell pre-owned e-bikes? And if not how do you go about selling them? There has to be a market out there. I’d like some information and feed back. Any and all comments are welcome.

When I chose to sell our 10 year old Pedegos earlier this year and get into something more modern, I placed an ad in the local Craigslist and they were sold the next day.

And this was in February, before all of the new interest in e-bikes so folks could stay off public transit, and before all of the new e-bike supply disruption had manifested itself.

Today it should be even easier to sell a used e-bike, and potentially get an even better price.

A lot depends on your location. Either coasts they sell pretty easily I think. Now that will also depend on how much you want to loose, and how fast you want to sell. I sold two fat tire Sondors this spring. Started with an add on the Sondors Facebook owner's page for $1400 for 2 bikes. No takers, reduced it to $1200, no takers, put an add on Facebook Marketplace in Peoria, IL for $1,000 and sold them. I paid $1,200 for the two from different owners, added new displays and aftermarket controllers, so had around $1400 in the two bikes, so was pleased. I can't imagine wanting to sell to a LBS for them to sell. They'd have to offer you half or less of the current value for them to even bother with it.

You always see the "pre-loved" section of ebikes for sale on most manufacturers website, but they never have any listed. I'm gonna sell my City Commuter. I'm gonna see what the bicycle shop offers me for it, and see if my boss at work wants to beat the offer, as long as the offer from the shop isn't a crazy low-ball offer. My wife got me a cool moped one year for my birthday. The ergonomics were terrible! I went to the shop that sold it to see if they wanted to purchase/consign and the sales guy says he wont insult me with an offer. So I just took it the moped the thrift store and donated it. Then, I get a call from the owner of the shop and he ask why I didn't ask his shop to sell/consign it. I told him what his sales guy said and the shop owner fired him! So we'll see what price range a City Commuter commands very soon. Keep ya posted.

Pedego dealers that rent ebikes locally may sell their ex-rental bikes at the end of the season eg https://www.pedegoelectricbikes.com/pre-loved/

Some brands recondition and sell used models as online sales although some demand all sales are final so you can't try before you buy eg Genze in MI https://www.genze.com/nearly-new-2/

Crazy Lenny's in WI & FL sells ex-demos and discounted overstock https://www.crazylennysebikes.com/specials/

As well as Craigslist & Facebook Marketplace, BicycleBlueBook sells used ebikes online distributed from a warehouse in CA eg https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/marketplace/buy-now/?t=E-Bike

Trek like several other brands offer a trade-up program, where you can hand in a bike or ebike for store credit, but they're run through BicycleBlueBook so they only accept bikes made after 2000 eg https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/retail_bbb_bike_trade_in/.

Local bike shops may discount ebikes at the end of season in late fall, and some brands have black Friday deals around Thanksgiving - search this forum for some of the threads discussing them.

Ok, what I learned. My City Commuter is going up for sale. The shop will consign it, and they get the price like this. I think its minus 1% for each mile. I have 870 miles on the bike, so its $870 off of retail. They figure it should sell easily at $2000. I told them to freshen it up even though its in excellent overall condition. Possible new rear tire, new pedals (I have ugly bmx pedals on it) and a tune-up. I'd be thrilled with $1200-$1500 honestly, so I'll keep everyone posted on the final sale price and all the details.

What is the consignment fee?

Oops, 10% is the fee. My boss at work was interested in my City Commuter but he doesn't want to go over $1000 max. I don't really want to go below $1500. The shop says $2000 is very doable. I've always maintained the battery to the highest standards. Purchased it new at the very end of December 2019.

Its officially on consignment. Will post my final results when it sells. Whats weird is I have no urge to replace it. I hate riding home from work really late at night thru/past certain neighborhoods, and my route is not the most bicycle friendly to begin with. Will stick to the motor scooter for now.

It (Pedego CityCommuter 28") sold for $2300. After 10% commission and the cost of the tune-up and full check-over I walked away with $1936(ish). I was happy and the new owner was happy.
