Now I know why my motor rusted.

I had a Gen 2 speed motor bottom bracket rust. Now I know why. most people would not have this issue but my bike would stay wet for days in the unheaded garage and takes or weeks of rain and 99% humidity
these are the instructions to replace the seals. but the seals are grease and a plastic ring and then a felt ring on the inside. so if your bike does not dry out its going to be an issue.

Thank you for the heads up. I presume these are dealer instructions?
Fortunately, I have yet to ride in the rain or get my bike seriously wet, but now I'm forewarned.

no I bought the kit off of amazon. no with a couple of tools you can do it but its a pain to get the chainring off.
but this was three years of riding every day in the pacific northwest. sometimes a rain ride every day or two or three a day for a week or more. Plus the bike would not dry off in my shed when the humidity was so high for days or weeks on end. so its not really a issue for most people.

When I seen your pics of your rusted motor before it went for a replacement, I started taking preventive measures by spraying silicone lubricant in the crank shaft. I don't ride much in the rain but my bike gets washed once a week from riding dirt trails, after each wash I thoroughly dry it with a leaf blower.
Rust still probably gonna be an issue in the future, because I live near the ocean. Hell my Toyota Tacoma has rust on it now, even with rust proofing, but then again it's a 1997.
you should use a grease the silicone could get in there and mess up the grease.

And don't forget there's this:

Pretty sure i've mentioned it before.
I haven't tried it but it looks likely to produce an even better seal - if you need it.
Or keep slapping on the Lanolin Bosch "Tacky" grease :)

I have not open my motor. Brose motor on my Bulls is belt drive. I think the crank shaft is entirely separated from the motor.
Material science is complex & intense these days, you may find because of the viscosity of the Silicone it may permeate it's way further into the engine (not completely "seperated") where it could make contact with a completely in-compatible grease that is performing an important role.

This is known since 2016. You can even get a replacement kit from Bosch (includes the right motor cover, bearing etc.).
I already replaced that bearing on over 20 motors and always add that ring and grease. This plastic ring became standard on new motors later.

Here you can find my post in the German ebike forum from over 6 years ago:

I still have two new lock ring tools original Bosch for sale, $20 each.
