New Shimano motor

Bike radar mentioned pedal drag.

"Pedal drag is most noticeable when the motor system is turned off – some people have likened pedalling an electric bike without assistance to riding through glue. These sensations should be reduced with the EP8 system. "

Reduced, but not eliminated. That would be a deal breaker for me.

Is there an ebike motor out there that totally eliminates drag?

The current E8000 motor is known for having very minimal drag and it has been noted to have less than many others. It looks like the new motor will have even less.

I think they all have some drag. Some more than others. The Bosch units with the 2:1 gear reduction have very noticeable drag when powered off.
I personally don’t think a little drag when not powered on is a deal breaker. I rarely if ever pedal with the motor off. I think the extra weight of an ebike is a much bigger contributor....

I think my Creo is supposed to be drag free when pedaling with the motor off. I'm unsure about the claim, but I have sometimes forgotten to turn the motor on and set off and don't realize that I haven't turned the motor on until a minute or two later. I don't feel drag, but then I sort of notice that I'm not getting that subtle push of the motor helping me.

This new Shimano motor seems very promising. I'm wondering if it's narrow enough to use with a double chain ring set up.

E8000 was already a very reliable high quality motor and with this update they may simply be the leader in emtbs. The new one seems to be equal or better than bosch gen4.
Shimano is the biggest brand when it comes to bike parts hence it gives them the edge when it comes to support and integration(DI2 for example). I also like that it gives users good freedom to adjust the support levels.

I have an E8000 and there is minimum drag. Hopefully the new motor will have even less

I also have the E8000 and agree the drag is very low. It feels like it has less drag than my gf’s Bosch Active Line. If the EP8 has less it will have to be almost non-existent....

I am also excited about the significant updates to the E-Tube and E-Tube Ride apps. I’ll have to confirm, but it looks like several of the new features will also work with the E8000.

Since the new EP8 also has one way clutch the pedal drag will probably be the same as Bosch gen 4, yamaha etc. hence will be good. So far the reviewers I have seen on youtube agree on it being very low drag like the other mid drives on the market.

Another decent review...

I was wondering why they did not mention the clunky sounds from the motor and sure enough the very first comment on that video was just that.

Things that are in Shimano's favor:

  1. The E-tube app and its configurability separates shimano.
  2. Low q-factor
  3. Low weight
  4. Low drag
  5. Di2 compatibility
Things that are not in Shimano's favor:
  1. No Class 3
  2. No dual battery
  3. No shift detection
Overall, the new EP8 would be very well received by riders if they resolve the rattling sound issue.
