Hi, my name is Eric. I want to thank Court for directing me to this forum. I have a Cube 29er that I would like to convert to an electrical bike. I have been looking for a while now and my mind is all over the place with the enormous amount of information out. I am hoping that perhaps with some help I can begin to narrow down the choices. Basically, I use my bike to carry a lot of weight, i.e I shop and have a two wheel tag a long for my 18 year old son. The combined weight with my son and myself and our bikes is about 380 lbs. I live in an area that does have hills but they aren't extreme, but it's enough to take everything I have to do it. My son loves his bike so much that he insists on the longest ride I can give him. :) Any advice as to what system would work best for us would be very much appreciated. Because of what I pull, my speeds are very moderate and I'd still like to get some exercise; so I wouldn't mind a pedal assisted system at all. Thank you in advance.

Hi Eric,

Here is another site for building e bikes.
I want to try a build someday.

For the weights you mention, the optimum motor that is widely available and completely documented is the Bafang BBS02. It's a mid-drive. For motors with some level of popularity there are not that many DIY motors available. The BBSHD is the other mid-drive choice, and it is better engineered to handle heat. If you carry 380 pounds, combined weight, heat will be an issue with any hill.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube discussing the 02 and the installation. You can pedal an ebike even if it has a throttle. DIY ebikes don't tend to have sophisticated pedal assist systems, but they work.

Thank you guys for your input. Your advice helps me out a bunch. I am now looking at the BBSHD and it seems amazing. Thanks again. It's nice to be in touch with helpful people.
