I’m a reasonably fit 69 yo with dodgy knees. I started riding a Giant Defy road bike 3 years ago with some younger guys. I improved from 12-13 mph to 14-15 mph on group rides, but still came in last.
I started shopping electric bikes this winter in search of an equalizer. I wanted a Class 3 Speed Pedelec. The choices came down to a Giant Road- E+, a Trek CrossRip+ or a Trek Domane+. The Road E and the CrossRip cost about the same. It was not a fair competition since the Domane is about $2K to $3K more. My test ride on the Domane+ blew the competition and the budget away.
I have put about 150 miles on the bike this month and it has exceeded expectations. The carbon frame makes it 6-7 lbs lighter than either alloy frame bike. The Bosch Purion controller, 1x drive system and 11 speed SRAM derailleur work flawlessly. The light system and 35mm tires are supurb. The only cons so far is it is a bit weird standing up and pedaling. Works better staying seated. Also it requires spinning at a fairly high cadence. Can’t wait to ride with the group again since I am averaging 17-18 mph on the same old routes!
