New E-Motion Evo Cross or Used 2014 Stromer ST1 Platinum?

My apologies if this has been asked before.

Looking for my first e-bike, I’m 50 years old, 6 foot, short legs long back and 215lb., looking for an e-bike for leisurely paved bike path for fun and exercise.

I have my eye on a new Easy Motion Evo Cross $2,999, I like the looks and the reviews all look good. I have dealer in tax free state about an hour and half away I can go and take a look.

I was pretty much set on this bike, when I came across a used May 2014 Stromer ST1 Platinum 17” with rigid forks and 500 miles on the odometer in like new condition for $2,500.

I’m a beginner cyclist will be riding mostly solo and I like the idea of a back up throttle on the Evo Cross, I like the look of the Evo cross slightly better too.

However the ST1 Platinum is in like new condition and looks like a great saving over new, but is this a bike for a newby like myself that quite heavy.

The ST1 frame is 17” not sue if that is the right size for me, my trouser inseam is 32” so I would guess my inseam is about 30-31. The new Evo of course I can buy either the medium or large frame has they are new and I have a choice.

For those that have looked at both and chose one of the other what was your thoughts and reasoning.

I’m confused over geared vs gear-less and which is better. Everyone likes speed but I want distance has well. The ST1 seems a heavy bike compared with the Evo cross.

Any thoughts….

The little motor in the Evo (same as my Neo Carbon) is surprising powerful and does not suffer from lack of freewheeling. I'm selling my practically new and upgrade Neo Carbon for less than the EVO and it has a full carbon frame and many upgrades. PM me if you want more info. Whatever you choose, enjoy the search and eventual purchase.

A lot of these bikes have huge margins. Paying 2500 for a used ebike seems high. Negotiate hard and offer them $500 less, or just wait until fall when they dump their 2015 models for much less.

The Stromer is fairly heavy but a qualty ride, and the warranty should be transferable. Ask a dealer if the warranty would transfer and for how long
 
Thanks for all the feed back, I'm still leaning towards the Evo series, with my weight and stye of riding I think the extra torque would benefit me over the extra speed.

@DWEBiker,Thanks for the link to the motor explanation, again I think the geared motor is more my style.

I like the idea of coasting and I don't think the regenerative engine breaking would put same amount of power back has just freewheel coasting in a geared motor with no engine breaking (Distance).

@JoePah The used ST1 is not at a dealer but a private seller trying to recoup has much has they can and I don't blame them.

I driving up to the dealer at the weekend to take a test ride, whats people general experience with dealers and MSRP on Easy Motion bike, do they have wiggle room or are most firm.

I have no problem with a business making a profit but if there're deals to be had, no one likes to over pay.

There seems to a few subtle differences between the 2014 Neo Cross and the Evo Cross that it's worth looking at new unless of course there is an absolute bargain used.

I ride Easy Motion (EVO series) and can recommend the bikes. The motor does provide good torque.

I agree with most of the above, except...

...like every e-bike I have checked, the Stromer warranty is not transferable.

From those choices - Evo Cross, hands down - simply being able to charge the battery on the bike is a big plus over the Neo Cross. I wouldn't even consider Stromer.
 
I really like the looks of the Evo Cross and the specification, It looks like this will be my choice.

The used Stromer Platinum is only good to me if I can get it at a silly price. When it comes to tech like this you want the latest and greatest unless of curse there is huge saving.

I offered them $1,500 for the Stromer Platinum, all they can say is no, they're thinking over my offer. I think they will say no, so I'm planning on the Evo Cross.

The Platinum is over 4k new. That's a good price. ;)
You're comparing Chevy to Cadillac.
See where that Neo is in a few years.

From the reviews on this site it appears that BH (Easy Motion) makes a product at least as good as the Stromer ST1, probably better. Especially for the dollar spent.

Check out the second to last paragraph in this review for example, and take Court's gentle critique style into consideration.

You're right that used Stromers ought to be selling for less, however, I've seen used ST1 Platinums sell for $3,000+ even with more than 1,000 miles on them, so it seems like the perceived quality of Stromer bikes combined with their high MSRP seems to be buoying prices of used Stromers. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not sure that someone selling a Stromer ST1 Platinum would take a $2,000 offer because they could wait a week and find someone willing to buy it for $2,500.
 
I ended up ordering a 2015 Easy Motion Evo Cross, I will update with thoughts once it arrives.

I ordered the medium, I'm 6 foot however I have a longer torso and my legs are shorter than you would expect.

The bike arrive Friday and I took it for it's first ride tonight, review posted in E Motion Topics. The medium turned out to be the correct size for me, it's very very close to my Large Specialized Crossroads elite.
