New Como 5.0

That sure looks like some nice riding there, all I have is roads with corn and bean fields to look at. How do you like the seat on your bike, I didn’t really like mine. I put my brooks saddle on mine.

New motor arrived today. Current motor had some intermittent issues. Specialized said Replace. Install tomorrow at Moab Cyclery.

That’s good to hear... hope it will last a very long time. I put my brooks saddle on... I think I like it better.
Made me a mount for the rear light, turned out ok.... also added a rear view mirror and a cell phone holder. Still waiting on my rear rack and rack bag.

Hopefully you haven’t already covered this in another post, but I see you have a Topeak MTX bag on your rack. Did you replace the stock rack or did you purchase the RackTime adapter and mod the bag? Also, those pedals are nice, I like (the anodizing is neat) may I inquire as to the make/model?

I’m waiting on my Vado 4.0 to come in and I’m debating on the RackTime bag or the Topeak w/modification. Also, good addition with those Ergon grips. I upgraded my previous 2 Specialized bikes with those grips (I prefer the GP3’s) and I’m putting them on my new Vado. Best grips IMO on the market today.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. I have a 2019 Turbo Como 5.0. As I recall, my model came with a front "pizza" rack and no rack in back. I really liked the idea of the quick sliding attachment of the MTX trunk bag. My LBS acquired the correct model Topeak rack (compatible with hydraulic brakes, no "mousetrap" spring bar, etc.) and bag for me. AFAIK, there was no modification or adapter needed for the rack fitment.

As as been discussed elsewhere, for my setup the rear trunk bag completely obscures rear view of the factory saddle-mounted tail light. Thus I added a Garmin radar tail light to the rear of the Topeak rack- and that location affords an outstanding rear view of the very bright tail light.

I love the Ergon grips, as they make a very different and comfortable alternate riding position, reducing fatigue.

A good friend referred me to the Catalyst replacement bike pedals. They are one of the most significant and positive additions I've made. I wear Soloman trail running shoes which are super comfortable and the larger pedal surface provides an awesome grip with better pressure distribution/reduced pedal discomfort. Absolutely awesome addition.

Happy Trails, Dirty Cash.

Excellent!

Thanks for your reply post gadgetnut! I’ll take a look at those Catalyst pedals and I’m still not he search for a trunk bag, but I think the Topeak MTX is the way to go!

Really appreciate your time!

Thanks so much for the picture! I'm about to get the topeak rack for this bike as well and I'm thrilled to see it fits so nicely. Out of curiosity what type of basket are you using for the front pizza racket and how did you end up securing it? So far I haven't found too many good options for the pizza rack and am even considering removing it if nothing works well for it. I've never had one of these racks before and am a bit puzzled by it, whereas I've always loved those Topeak MTX!

Thanks!

@TurboComo5.0 regarding accessory choices, I realize you are foregoing the FRONT rack but for interested others, carrying anything heavy in the FRONT rack adds unwelcome sway and momentum to steering. I’ve become accustomed to the dynamics and feel pretty comfortable transporting bulkier items home during a short ride from town. I don’t know if the 2020 Como 5.0 still has the saddle-mounted rear taillight but I found that a saddle bag or a rear rack trunk bag blocks view of the saddle taillight from behind. Given the geometry of my setup, the factory taillight is only partially visible and I added an additional accessory to the rear luggage rack, a Garmin radar taillight, which detects vehicles coming up behind and alerts audibly and visually to a handlebar-mounted display. BTW, I always had round rear view mirrors before but for this bike I bought the teardrop shaped handlebar rear mirror and find it incredibly perfect.

Regarding the corn and bean fields, I encourage you not to wait to travel elsewhere but celebrate every ride everyday and definitely share photos and stories with us along the way. As I was raised in the flats of the USA Midwest, I agree that the landscape scenery around me now is magnificent, a great joy. But the transformative experience– the ride– is with you now where you are and brings us together far and wide. :) Cheers, welcome, and happy trails.
The newest Como 5 has the rear lights on the fender. 3 small but bright LED's

I took my Como 5 in to get the motor and display firmware updated and checked out new Como bikes on the floor. Some had lights on the rear fender while others were under the seat. The salesperson said it’s hit or miss - they’re all new arrivals but some are coming in on the fender and others not. He said they have 500 on order among their stores and can’t guarantee which will show up. I wish mine had the light on the fender!

My wife says she wants one of the front pizza racks for trips to the farmers market. She rides a low step Como and says the eggs wouldn't survive the trip on the rear rack. I am not so sure, but if you take if off, shoot me a PM and I'll buy it for her.

Haven't broken an egg yet carrying them in their carton in my Vado rear rack mounted panniers.

Just sayin' 😎

FYI, I'm carrying eggs in a backpack. Bottles of "alko", too :D
Anecdote: Did you know it was "nealko" for any non-alcoholic drinks in the Czech Republic?

Just picked up my Como 5.0 on Tuesday and have been riding for two days. Very cool bike. My first electric. Going to think about a few modifications, starting with new grips with bar ends.

Two quick questions if anyone's interested (I did some research before asking).

1. On the device update page of MC it indicates "Vado - 15.12.2020" (see picture). I assume the 15.12.2020 is a date, but the Vado is confusing. As I mentioned, I have a Como.
2. On the diagnose page of MC it indicates a wheel circumference of 88.78 inches. I did some calculations online and come up with a slightly smaller circumference (I have the factory Nimbus II Sport Reflect, 60 TPI, 650b x 2.3). Also, my display's speed and distance indications are slightly higher than my Garmin GPS and my iPhone's GPS apps.

Does anyone have any thoughts regarding either?

Many thanks and I look forward to contribution to this discussion going forward.

First of all, congratulations for choosing this excellent, powerful, beautiful and comfortable e-bike! Many happy miles!
  • The "Vado" in MC is of course a bug in the app. Still, it is good to visit your dealer for an update.
  • Regarding the wheel circumference, let it be and just accept that. Many of us, Como and Vado users were visiting their LBS with exact measurement of their wheel circumference. The dealer was politely adjusting the wheel circumference to the desired value. Then users still observed discrepancy between the display and GPS values.
The Como is new to you. E-bike is new to you. At this moment, you pay attention to details of actually minor importance, which we more seasoned e-bikers learned to just ignore :) Enjoy riding your Como. The best of the best in its class!

I take this opportunity to invite you to our Specialized Turbo Vado/Como User Club.

This is good advice—thank you!
Thinking about a rear rack. I’m not sure I love the pizza rack.
