Modified Yamaha motor not spin the motor with your feet unpowered?

There is a used PakYak in Brooklynn with 17 miles. I'd like to buy it, if it is suitable for my 30 mile commute. I have seen that the Yamaha motor on Yamaha bikes was one that you did not spin the motor with your feet when riding unpowered. Does the modified Yamaha motor on the Momentum products preserve the internal clutch that lets the motor stay stationairy when pedaling PAS 0?
I rode unpowered about 70% of my 30 mile commute, both to make the trip on one battery, and to maintain my cardio health. It has gotten where I cannot buy >1000 watt geared hub mobors. They are illegal in 41 states. The available 750 watt geared hub motors burn the winding on the 12% hills on the first trip. My gross weight with groceries outbound (uphill) is 330 lb.
I could equip the PakYak with a 52 tooth rear sprocket if the 250 W mid-drive is not suitable. I wonder if the used one in Brooklynn was resold because it could not climb the Brooklynn bridge? Looks like a 28 tooth sprocket max in the PakYak pictures.
I went to my Momentum dealer 2 weeks ago and Momentum does not sell PakYaks anymore. He had a couple of cargo bikes with 20"x4" tires, which are not suitable for riding unpowered based on reports on this website. PakYak has a 55 psi capable 24"x61 mm tire.

I think the PakYak has the Syncdrive Pro motor with 80nm torque.
My Stance has the Syncdrive Sport with 70nm, and I've never met a hill I couldn't climb in level 4 assist. Never need level 5.
Some of the hills around me peak at about 16 - 17%. No problem.

I've got a full suspension 500W (750W peak) hub-drive Voltbike that can be unlocked to 43 kph and 18 amps (Canada's limit).

I added a 750W BBS02B mid-drive to help it get up hills and Plow into the Gale Force winds. 😁



You could get some sort of full-suspension hub-drive ebike that's legal in the states,(750W nominal, 1000 Watt peak) and add a 750 Watt mid-drive motor of some sort, with a 1000W peak and end up with 2000 watts.


I used 1st gear (34t) on my smaller chain ring (44t) to climb this hill with both motors, and it just climbed right up the hill.

People here on the forum talk about 8% grades.
I thought that 100% grade was straight up at 180°, but it's not.

100% grade is only 90°

This Fricken Hill is damn close to 100%.
I walked right up it.
I didn't pedal.

I detuned my motors to 18 amps so not to overheat them.
The motors share the work and the heat.

I could climb all day up hills hills like this at 18 amps per motor and not break or burn out anything.

It's completely intuitive though.

When I fall over I instinctively roll off both throttles to grab the brakes.

And I Hold On For Dear Life, cuz both my throttles are locked on at Full Blast, and I might not have rolled em' off all the way when I fell over?😁

I know that you had to give up riding cuz you aren't allowed to buy a 1000W 12T (or 10T or whatever?) motor that can climb the hills, so you got stuck in a Ford Truck that gets Zero MPG but pulls Major $'s outta ya to get to your cottage, and you just wanna get to your Damn Cottage Your FÙKin Own Damn Way.

I get that.

Two 750 watt motors on some sort of frame (downhill frame with extra rake angle too) would help immensely!!

I HATED the quick steering on my mountain bike So Much that I cut my bottom tube, and Smashed The HELL Outta My top tube to Rake out my mountain bike.
If I knew how to weld worth a Sĥiṭ, I woulda cut the steerer tube off at the downtubes and rewelded them back on at an appropriate rake angle, but I can't weld worth a sĤit, and this was the best that I could come up with.,..

It worked, but not that great.
The biggest thing that I noticed was that I had way more pedal strikes with my BB closer to the ground.
My forks didn't rotate forward very much.

I remember when you tried to buy a frame WITHOUT Quick Steering and were stonewalled.

There's simply nothing available.
We need to build our own ebikes with proper angles.

Yeah no kidding. 😁

I'm pulling 18 amps outta each battery at ~48V, and throwing it into two motors for over 1700W total.

I can turn up my mid-drive to 25 amps for a total of over 2300 Watts with fully charged batteries.
Both my motors can handle 52V batteries and 25 amps (legally purchased), and that would give me almost 3000 Watts with both motors pushing.

I'm not legally allowed to do that in Canada with our 500W, 750W peak limit, but it's fine to purchase in the USA.

The Yuba bodaboda with the 350 w front hub motor & 17.5 AH was stolen 2 weeks ago. Perp smashed the wood door with a hammer, then when they found the angle iron frame bolted down the back, they cut the hasp off the door with a grinder. Abus hasp, not a toy. Police have the serial # and a color picture of the bodaboda, no good news yet. That frame only threw me on my chin once in 2024, when a travel trailer used 13' of the 14' lane and forced me off the 4" high pavement edge. New bodabodas have Bosch mid-motors, which definitely spin the motor with your feet unpowered.
I have been transferring my junk pile to the summer camp in the F150. 21 mpg, BTW. I found a 1970's frame girls bike under the pile, 26x1 1/8" tires, 3 speed IGH. Those have no reduction in the IGH, and a 48 tooth front sprocket 18 tooth rear, so totally unsuitable for riding up 12% grades unpowered. Which I used to do on the 32 to 32 bodaboda. But I could change the front & rear sprockets on the English racer. Ditch the SA IGH for 8 speed derailleur. That ancient fork is probably slow steering. If I took another frame and welded the rear struts together to move the rear wheel back, I might be able to carry 60 lb cargo in panniers without making the weight on the front wheel <20 lb (which I have measured on mountain bikes). I have a boys austrian 3 spd racer to donate the extra steel struts. I'm too old to put my leg over a boy's bike. That frame has not thrown me on my chin yet, either.
4 attempts to steal my battery happened parked on the street or grocery parking lots in 8 years, so I am nervous about equipping a new bike with 2 of them. The triangle battery was encaged in aluminum angle with 22 screws, over the front wheel. A couple of screws were backed off a turn or two, with the elastic stop nuts fighting the perp all the way. Your dual battery setup screams "$1200 in batteries here, use your crowbar to smash the plastic".
Yeah 2 hub motors could do 12%, even 4 hills in a row. I had trouble lifting the rear of the bodaboda with a rear hub motor + groceries +tools +spares in the back. Steers much better with a front hub motor and no rear, pushing it out of the garage and riding too.
The question was not "will the Momentum Yamaha climb 12% at 330 lb gross"? David Matthew said yes. The question, "can I ride the momentum Yamaha 25 miles unpowered so I still have a little battery left to climb the dozen steep hills in the last 5 miles"? I won't be able to put a 17.5 AH battery on a Momentum PakYak, they are (by the picture) internal and probably a fiddly 7 AH or something.
I need to get back on a bike. And pedal unpowered 24 miles a day twice a week. I've lost 10 lb since heart ablation surgery put me off the bike 4/25, and it was all thigh and glute muscle. My stomach is rounder than ever. I have a vary speed pacemaker now, that might allow me to ride a bike unpowered again. As long as I don't drag the motor with my feet.
