Measuring power consumption of a full charge & calculating costs...

Hi Smart people,

In these times of outrageous petrol price increases, has anyone got any relatively simple ways of measuring a charge of our fancy ebikes and calculating that in dollars and cents?

New Zealand has some of the highest petrol prices in the world:

Would be interested in any tips on how to get a sense of cost of charging my SuperCharger 2!

Hello Sam

Both batteries total 1 kWh. Maybe add 40% inefficiencies of charging (total guess). Therefore what's your cost of 1.4 kWh?

Divide monthly electicity cost by the kWh consumed to get the actual unit cost (not net of fixed charges). Mine is about $0.36. Therefore for me about 50c to charge.

I'm sure others will refine this.

Since you referred to petrol costs: The Nyon display has a $ petrol saved utility.

so I found I'm with Meridian Energy but trying to find their cost per kWh on their website virtually impossible! using their live chat on their website now to see if that helps!

Ditto .

Check your last bill. Mine states the supplied kWh for the period. Their kWh cost will not include the fixed daily charge. Hence my suggestion above.

Turns out I was wrong on Meridian, it's Contact - their website was a bit clearer...

so maybe around 32c per charge give or take.... not bad for regular 150km+ range!
 
Seems the upcoming Nyon software upgrade also estimates CO2 emission savings by using the ebike instead of car, in addition to petrol cost savings.
 
My friend in Diamond Harbour (you'll know that Peter) recently spent NZD$20K on solar panels for his house - expecting a 9yr ROI on that... but he's also bought a Nissan Leaf EV and expects to be able to charge and drive that for "free" off solar excess during summer months....

I expect petrol to continue to increase, along with electricity, so wondering whether investing in solar now makes sense.....!
