Lost and Found

Yesterday on my way home I found a couple of things on the rural rail trail I take everyday. The first was a small digital camera, I didn't know what to do with it so I left in on a nearby covered picnic table, trail-side and asked everyone I came across if they'd lost it. Didn't find the owner, hopefully the owner found the camera. The second item I found was a car! Well not really, I found a set of car keys and I set out to find the owner and did, just a few miles down the trail. The owner was frantic and thankful.

Once I lost a pair of prescription titanium framed sunglasses, not cheap. I doubled my miles that day and never found them. Not a small task, as that was pre-e days.

In a rural setting there's really little you can do to find the owners of lost items or to find items you've lost. Last year I found a really nice smart-phone, I asked everyone I came across if they'd lost a phone and no luck. I got the phone home and thought if I had lost a phone I would call it and see if the person would return it, but it never rang. There was nothing I could do as the phone was locked, so I turned it in to the local sheriff's department.

I've found lots of things on the trail/road, most personal items like clothing, but once I found a child's bike, what do you do with that? What have you lost and found?

I find I am pretty lazy to stop and pick things up but I haven't really found such treasures as you did. Once I found sunglasses that looked they just flew off somebody's car roof. In the past I have seen small tools, dimes, hats ... for all of those I failed to feel the incentive to stop. Some other items I find seem to be to large to pick up and I think to myself perhaps I should return with a car but I never do. I should put this on a list of self improvement items

I wouldn't stop for the clothing and most personal items either, there's little point to it. I just assume folks will come back for stuff. Maybe I find stuff because I hang my head in shame for having cheated by riding an ebike

I tend to find more stuff on the roads than the multiuser paths. I found several hand tools on a ride a few weeks ago. It was like someone drove down the road with his tool box open. I must admit I didn't spend much time looking for the owner. They were cheap tools anyway - harbor freight and Pittsburg stuff. Another common find are abandoned bicycles. From they way they are left...I would guess they are stolen for joy rides and left behind. This is normally on the southwest side of town. Low income district. We ride through there on one of our favorite canal bank rides.

The lesson learned for that one is to put an alternate contact # on the lock screen!

Years ago I found a man's wallet that had been dropped and landed right near where I parked my car outside of a mall. I took the wallet home, tried to contact the guy, but his drivers license address was no longer valid and he wasn't listed anywhere on the interwebs or through directory assistance.

So then I got creative. I called the customer service number on the back of one of his credit cards and told the CC agent I was calling to ask THEM to contact this guy since he was their customer, and let him know his wallet had been found and I was trying to find him so he and his wallet could be reunited. The agent was surprised I went to the trouble, but was pleased.

So the credit card company was able to reach him and he drove to my place and picked up his wallet. I felt really good about doing that and going the extra mile.

I lost my mind once riding on a congested trail, but no one ever found it or returned it. I'm probably better off without it, lol.

Found a really nice Bern helmet on the AM ride. How do you lose your helmet? I just put it on a trailside bench, I'm sure they'll be back for that!

I'm waiting to find money! Can't leave that on a park bench, someone would steal it

found $17 bucks at the outlet mall a month back - waited around close by for a few minutes to see if anyone wandered around looking at the ground, no luck...for them anyway!

The helmet was still there today! I guess the rider rode farther than the should've and ther're not willing to backtrack for it... they should get an e-bike

I would have taken the helmet home and left a note in a couple places letting it be known a helmet was found and then they could call and identify it.

That may work. One good thing here is that there's really no crime! My township has 0 police, no department at all and still no crime. Maybe the crime follows the cops A couple hundred people would have passed that helmet in two days and there it sits, good ol' Pennsyltucky! I love where I live! Of course we do "cling to our bibles and guns". Someone once said that about PA.

Lost a fairly good rear light this week, never heard it fall. I guess if I could wait I would likely find one, my backup light can't be seen all that well so I picked up one of these. Amazing little light!
