It’s a rear hub drive. What’s in the space that a middrive would otherwise occupy?
Might be a cool project to put a Bafang M620 in that space.

If you look at the photo from the left side of the bike, you can see the key dangling from behind the crank... My guess is that when they repurposed a mid-drive frame, they designed the 36V 9.6ah battery to fit in that space.

Could they have crammed it into the space where the mid-drive motor would go? That would make sense if the key is by the crank.
It's only a 36v 9.6ah battery so it MIGHT fit there?

They did indeed do that. If you watch the video, it shows a person inserting a plug and also unlocking the battery and taking it out. Looks exactly like a mid-drive motor, but it's a battery!
Small and not (easily) removable battery... 350 W motor.... Nah.
Love the company building - typical in China, even in the capital. Top floor for execs - some mini-split A/C units here and there. Bottom three floors - for bottom-paid folks, no AC, no soup for you, open the windows if you must, work-work-work.

I guess they are betting on the esthetic appeal of hidden battery.
There could be a market segment with such a need. IMO, a misguided need in the case of a workhorse bike like this one. And it comes at the expense of functionality - can't bring battery inside for charging, can't use one of generic form-factors like Reention or bottle.

My guess is that they already did the frame design, and someone at the company said "Why the hell not?"
Seems in line with the vibe I get if I when I start flipping through Alibaba.
The considerations like "Why the hell not" likely came at the very beginning of the design process. Probing the market, to see if it sells. It's hard to imagine somebody doing the frame design without thinking of the battery placement.

I think you misunderstood (easy to understand, since I misworded my post)
I didn't mean to suggest that they designed the frame for this purpose.
They could have built the frame for a client company (or maybe a failed Kickstarter?), or they were sitting on/had access to a lot of overstock for cheap, and it was cost effective for them to retrofit a mid-mounted battery. The shape certainly looks like a Bafang mount, and a quick search shows it's not the only bike they make with this oddball style.
