Insufficient Privileges - Cannot Reply to For Sale forum threads

This is a note I see at the bottom of a post in the For Sale forum.

Are we now segregating members?

How many posts have they made, or is it for you? There is a minimum number of posts required before you post in the for sale. It's an incentive for people to join and participate instead of just using the forum for selling.

Maybe the poster of the thread has "ignored" some members and the ignored members cannot reply. I don't really know though.

Yes, it is a safety measure to nurture the community.
There are members who just try to promote one brand without ever contributing to the other aspects of the "community"; they never share their experience or document some technical findings. They use the forum as a promote just one thing and then there are some who will try to muddy someone else's thread.
Recently, there was someone who was trying to sell a very nice BionX bike at a very reasonable price, and one irresponsible member was trying to cause a lot of trouble. What this does is create a hostile environment where newcomers would hesitate to share and slowly EBR would lose its reputation or credibility. So, this new rule would help minimize such situations.

Disabling replies to an entire subforum seems like an excessive overreaction to the actions of a couple of misbehaving members. It feels like the rest of us are punished alongside for their misdeeds. Nevertheless, the owners of the site have their right to make whatever rules they wish.

I applaud the action in that area. Why do we all need to see the conversation between seller and potential buyer? What’s wrong with PM?

It's a great idea. I remember the BionX ad, someone needlessly trashed the bike and poster with several posts. They had no experience with BionX, nor did they know the seller. Most classified forums don't allow a comment section.

Correct, we just disabled this for only that subforum. I updated the description as well as the pinned FAQ in there to help, but it may take people time to get used to the change.

It doesn't help that the "Insufficient privileges" messages is so vague... I'll see what I can do about changing that.

I spent some time reading back through other threads in the "For Sale" subforum. I found quite a few where the replies were just pointless arguing about whether the price was fair. Others had replies such as "is this still available?" or "I want to buy it"... basically, replies that didn't add any value to the thread and would have better fit in a private message.

This is the only subforum where replying has been disabled, and I think it's a good fit since this is essentially our community Craigslist. We've had it requested from quite a few posters too Hopefully, this will help streamline things for everyone involved.

This decision isn't set in stone, we're definitely open to feedback if it causes problems for anyone!

I'm able to reply in other forums - what's changed? Have I been a bad boy?

I don't think classifieds allow replies...perhaps I'm mistaken, but I seem to recall this is the case.
The idea is that a reply can be sent as a DM or PM only, so threads are not built on a classified listing.
That's what I know to be the case.
