Help finding my white whale?

Hi folks,

The idea of an ebike has intrigued me for awhile now and over the past year or so I’ve looked quite heavily into the world of pre-built ebikes. Not really interested in DIYing anything at this point.

That said, I feel like I’ve not found one that necessarily fits the bill for the things I want/don't want, which are:

Wants:
- Integrated, removable battery (able to be charged off bike)
- Throttle (on demand throttle type preferred, not limited to after pedal)
- Integrated lighting (bonus points for brake lights that react to the brakes being activated)
- Frame that fits a smaller person (5’7”)
- Overall sleek, more minimalistic look on the fixie/hipster side of things (more on the side of Van Moof or Cowboy and less on the side of RadRunner or the Aventon Level)
- Priced around $1,750 USD (or less)

Don't Wants:
- Step-through bike frame
- Folding bike
- Fat tire bike
- Super heavy frame

In the past I looked pretty heavily into Wing Bikes (and for that matter Van Moof), as it kinda hits all of the above asks. However, a few things had me worried: 1) that the bike wouldn’t fit. They list it as fitting riders 5’6” - 6’4”, but seems like the frame size is ~58cm. My last bike was a Nashbar single speed cyclocross @ 52cm (pretty sure that was size...) and it felt too tall for me. That said, multiple people have remarked that the Nashbar SSCX ran tall (see posts like this) but it does have me a bit apprehensive. I also know they have the smaller "S" version of the Freedom, but something about the geometry looks like a kid's bike to me, so it's a no go there. 2) would be the customer service concerns. Seems like there are posts and reviews everywhere about issues with customer service. To be fair, I’ve also seen posts praising their customer service, but it does seem pretty hit or miss.

For a bit I also looked at the Ride1Up Core-5/LMT’d, but it’s missing the integrated lights and honestly I don't think I’m 100% sold on the looks. I know the customer service/reputation of Ride1Up is more established, though, so that was a trade off.

Overall, just looking for insight from the folks here who know a lot more than I do about the wide world of electric bikes. As a general aside, I'd love to stay in the $1,750 or less range, but if there's something that's just above there I'd consider it, too. Feel free to also shoot back things that are way outside that range as well - it'll help me daydream for the future! Regardless, know I'm asking for quite a lot here but the question remains: does the bike I’m looking for exist or am I chasing something that isn’t on the market (yet)?

Wiring in a brake light for an ebike does not seem to be the norm except Rad Bikes rear light holds steady when you pull the brake lever, an aftermarket wiring solution seems complicated, you might be better off with a Lumos helmet that uses the accelerometer in your phone to activate a brake light on your helmet, and the helmet meets the Dutch NTA 8776 speed pedelec (equivalent to US Class 3) standard.

Interesting thought - will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks!

Luna Fixed Stealth
Thanks for the reply. While I like the look of the Stealth, it's missing quite a few of the features I want (removable battery, throttle, and integrated lighting.) It also seems like they only have the larger frame size but that could just be the current stock situation.

This probably doesn't hit the looks part of your requirements, but hits plenty of others...

I agree on the Sport. The first bike I thought of was the Core-5, that you mentioned. It's pretty plain looking, and you don't like the looks and lack of lighting. The Ride1Up 700 scores on both looks (nicer looking than the bikes you linked to) and front/rear lighting that runs off the battery and falls in your budget. 62 pounds with rack/fenders, heavier than some, feels plenty light riding on level ground with no PAS assistance.

Thanks for the link! Not sure I'd seen this one before. I think you're right that it doesn't really suit my looks preference, but I'm gonna do more research into this one too.

Appreciate your input. I'm not quite sure what it is about 'em, but I just can't get into most of the Ride1Up styles. I like the Roadster V2, but it's also missing quite a bit of what I'm looking for.

I'm probably being too picky, so will likely have to compromise on some of these. I'm just waiting for the second I buy one to find another bike that fits the bill exactly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't worry. Being picky in these threads is good. Without a focus, you'll get recommendations that are all over the place and end up worse than where you started. With a focus, you will get recommendations that represent small compromises and you can understand the lay of the land better.

The problem with your requirements is that, hidden in the looks category, you want a skinnier bike. In order for them to look like that, battery usually isn't removable. Also, in order to be skinny, the battery is usually on the smaller side, making throttle use not very efficient.

Love that insight, thanks for the wisdom!

That Espin bike for all appearances is identical to a $900 bike you can order from walmart, 48v 500w.
I watched a video review of the walmart bike & was impressed to see so much bike for so little money.
The walmart bike doesn´t come with fenders; that´s the only difference. That´s fine with me; I got rid
of the flimsy plastic fenders on my first bike anyway. What I ride now has a greater range of gears,
but other than that it is much the same save that I paid $400 more for it. So, why pay $600 more to get
fenders. Espin is offering free $170 racks ´for a limited time only´, but so what? I think I might have
bought the $900 bike if I didn´t already have something only slightly better. (Macwheel stepover)

very interesting - if I end up going that route, I'll definitely take a look at the bike you've mentioned. thanks!

Well, there are two or three videos on Utube for the ´ $900 ebike´. Don´t take my word for it;
check it out. I looked at walmart online. They are marketing dozens of ebikes. I found a Macwheel
step-thru, but didn´t search long enuff for the one in the video,(Geez,I hate when the font jumps
like this!) You´ll recognize it, looks just like that espin sans fenders.

Thanks John - appreciate the insight!

Y'know the more digging around for contenders I do, the more I wish the Cowboy was available in the US market.

Someday...😢
