A very nice concept bike, however a bit disappointing that the real model will have to wait until March 2021.

The new e-bike brand from H-D actually began life as a skunkworks project in Harley-Davidson’s Product Development Center. As the company explained, they began with “a small group of passionate motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts working with a single focus to design and develop an eBicycle worthy of the Harley-Davidson name.” Ultimately, they decided along with H-D to spin off the brand into a dedicated electric bicycle company that could focus purely on delivering a premium e-bike product and experience.

In addition to Aaron Frank, other major players from H-D’s in-house e-bike program that made the jump to Serial 1 Cycle Company include Jason Huntsman, president; Ben Lund, vice president; and Hannah Altenburg, lead brand marketing specialist. Serial 1 will officially debut its first electric bicycle models for consumers in March 2021. For now, the company is showing off its first prototype model, which the brand describes as “a styling exercise, not necessarily intended for mass production.”

This prototype has been styled after that original 1903 Serial Number One motorcycle from Harley-Davidson. But interestingly, we can see that it shares the same frame as
one of the original three electric bicycle prototypes that I spied last year at the 2019 EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show.

Probably smart on HDs part to throw out the tease now and get ebike fans salivating. I'm sure their current motorcycle owners will act as a great base of clientele.

Premium...and not even a hint at the price. I wonder what they think they can get? 🤔 Also, no mention of power either. Will it be a "crippled" Class 1 bike? That would be a huge mistake if it is, IMO.

i channel 9news posted on facebook that it will do 20 or 28 depending on local restrictions so im hoping this means class 2!

Rather they dumped it, as its not a particularly attractive or form functional product. Sorry, Harley.

Sure. And do you know what happens to rubber at high speed, and wear and tear over time ?
Belts in this application are a non-starter. First go look at how belts are applied on factory machinery, and cars, or even mowers. Next check out how they keep those belts from falling off their cogs or pulleys. Lastly, belts here on ebikes are looking to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Chains aren't noisy. Chains are inexpensive. Chains are durable. Chains don't cost you efficiency like belts do. Chains are super easy to replace, and super strong. Where is the problem ? You bothered by a little lubrication ? Sorry to be so blunt, but where's the emoticon for a palm slap to the forehead ? SMH.

Gates Carbon Drive belts last longer then chains and have little to no stretch. Clean, too. No lubrication of any required. They are not made of rubber, rather, they are made of proprietary polyurethane and carbon tensile cords. Belt tension is set with either a meter made by Gates or through a phone app. I have a 2013 Trek Soho DLX with the Gates Carbon Drive Center Track system coupled to a Shimano Nexus 8 speed rear hub. If anyone thinks a chain bike is quiet, they need to listen to a Gates Carbon Drive. It is absolutely silent. Imo, it's the best selling point of this HD bike. The rest is just.....meh.

It looks to serve a very narrow niche, that of the street & boardwalk cruiser bike crowd who want the ultimate in bragging rights. "Hey Pededgo rider, check out my Harley!"

Meanwhile, Yamaha brings out a unique and functional split frame dual suspension mountain bike featuring their world class mid drive PW-X2 motor which suddenly makes this ebike look old

And, may I ask, "is there something wrong with being 'old'"?
Wrinkles. Stuff breaks, multiple aches, and you don’t get better at nuthin. (Except for complaining) How’s that for starters ? ;) Thankfully your memory Also gets worse, and purges all the bad stuff from many years gone by. Eventually life turns out better than what actually happened. At least that’s what your mind recalls. That’s why you frequently hear old folk say ‘remember the good ole days?’

heck, my business is counting on all of that. You remember all the joy of bike riding from your youth, so you bought an E-Bike. Because your knees hurt, you hate those hills, you arent as strong as you were as a kid. And you forgot about the bad stuff, like flat tires, greasy chains, brakes that squeal, and that by your teens you wanted off that darn bike, and into that shiny new GTO.
You’ve come full circle now, and will soon be wearing diapers again.

First and foremost, HD has to survive, very questionable at the moment. This is the company that let Eric Buell get away from them. There are twin powered motorcycle companies sending Thank You cards to Milwaukee to this day. Being an HD branded bike ensures you could go to Wallmart and DIY a beach cruiser for about 1/100th of the retail on an HD product. :)

Belt Drives are the future... they offer many advantages over the old chain technology. ;)

Belts offer a few nice advantages over chains: a longer wear life (30,000km!), little to no drivetrain maintenance (no lube or degreaser), silent operation and a lower weight too.
They work out particularly well for bike travel; it’s cool to see there are now over 40 touring bike manufacturers with belt drive bikes in their line up.

chains suck, i want belts on ALL my bikes
i do not want grease on everything in my van that touches the bike

Harley has been using Gates belts for more than 30 years. I have a '90 FLHTCU belt drive I bought new. I think they know belts better than anyone.
