Hello everyone - I'm a US Expat living here in beautiful southern Germany with my wife, son and daughter, two Great Danes and a couple cats. I grew up north of Dallas, Texas about 30 miles, far enough to be out in the country. As a kid I put many miles on my trusty Schwinn 10 speed zipping around the country side to visits friends, go fishing at the lake or into town to play video games like pac-man, Galaga and Defender at the convenience store (ya I'm that old... ). That pretty much ended once I got my drivers license and started turning wrenches on muscle-cars. In my college years I worked and saved up for a Cannondale road bike which served me well, losing it somewhere along the way of moving about the US chasing careers in my 30s. Working, computers and programming became my new hobbies with a sprinkle of R/C airplanes. My 40's brought about a short stint with the motorized two-wheeled v-twin which was a great way to see my current residence of eastern Tennessee. But I was happy to sell it off after I met the love of my life and a couple years later my career took us back to Dallas (I always tell her I sold the motorcycle as I valued the family more, but maybe it's just too damn hot in Texas for me to enjoy a motorcycle) Life, family and careers moved along and I found an opportunity to take a project in Germany. Life here is not better or worse than the US, but certainly a different set of priorities. Public transportation is great and there's an endless amount of cycling/hiking trails. And if the weather is the least bit descent, they're going to be covered with people.

So in 2016 I purchased a Specialized Sirrus hoping to enjoy the trails and countryside. Unfortunately the years sitting at a desk all day had long wiped away my cycling physique and most of my motivation to ride. The following year, one of my coworkers picked up a Bulls ebike and after one ride, I knew I needed one too. After much lamenting over the broad choices available, I decided to focus on what I really needed: A good solid trekking bike to serve me well riding about the countryside or to work. Riese & Muller had just introduced their Supercharger which fit the bill with the Rohloff Speedhub, Gates beltdrive, HS and dual battery option. With around 1000km on it and swapping over to a Brooks B17 saddle, I couldn't be any happier.

Best regards,

Welcome. I think its about 108F in Dallas about now. I'm native Texan (El Paso) but live in Michigan. I'm well familiar with area north of Dallas and have family there (hence the emails I receive lately complaining about the weather).

Nice bike you've chosen. I guess I didn't realize that R&M was introducing a belt version that pairs with the Rohloff. I thought the belt was only an option with the Nuvinci. I recently purchased the Charger GX with Rohloff (dual battery) and have been commuting on that for a few weeks. So far I love the bike vs the Nuvinci version (and single battery) I had previously.

Since you are in Germany, have you any experience with the Racktime panniers? I can't tell from the photo the brand of panniers you have on the bike. I just ordered the Racktime Heda from Germany but they are yet to arrive. I just had some doubts on the lower attachments (appears to be a fabric strap) of the Heda and whether they will find a place on the GX rack to grab onto. The rack on the GX isn't uniform on both sides. Anyway, would be curious to hear how you've chosen to outfit the bike particularly for longer trips.

Thank you for the welcome and compliments on the bike. I too was about to pull the trigger on a Charger GX and then Ivan @ Tretmühle of Stuttgart asked "why not order the new Supercharger? GX" It was right after they announced the bike and I totally missed it. I'm glad I did as I really like the integrated batteries. Like it so much I've ordered the New Charger Mixte GT nuvinci for my wife. I love my Rohloff but the Nuvinci concept fits my wife's mechanically challenged sense of shifting...

I do not have any experience with The Racktime panniers, nor do I believe any of my riding buddies own any. The bags you see on my bike are the "Bike-Tourer" from Ortlieb (another German company) . I was already familiar with the brand as Ivan gifted me one of their Commuter-Bags from the Urban Line for patiently waiting what seemed like an eternity to take delivery of my bike. One of my reasons for going with the Bike-Tourer series is the sides are internally reinforced so they hold their shape loaded or not. They are NOT a roll-top style bag so there's not much variation in the storage volume, but the tops do fold over in a manner that have kept the interior dry in any moderate rain storms I've ridden through. Plus I'm not a fan of the PVC coated look of so many of the bags on the market...

I went online and checked out the Ortlieb Bike-Tourer panniers. I do like the buckle closure vs the rolltop and their exterior pockets. I'm currently using the Ortlieb Gravel-Pack bags which are about as minimalist as you can get (no interior pockets, no exterior pockets, very light..). I put a single layer of black electrical tape on the rack in the spots where I secure the hooks such that I have to push the hooks down to get them to lock - but then there is almost no rattling. The Gravel-Pack panniers are working fine for a daily commute but lately I've been curious to try a single piece double bag system with a carrying handle in middle hence the order of the Racktime Heda. Also with the Racktime I ordered the lock hoping to be able to leave them on the bike when I go to the grocery store. When the Hedas arrive and if they fit I'll post some pics in my owner's thread.
