DJI motors and ebikes

I cant find any post for this bombshell, so heres to new ebike components by a company that is banned in the US

Well dji have been on a blacklist since 2022 and now the US is about to ban their drones, which is pretty well all they make.
Chy-na wars, and weve been dragged in as well.
Interesting. I found this article which provides a more nuanced explanation of the current situation. An interesting read.

i think that’s a gross exaggeration, “about to ban…”

here’s a decent summary from the AP a month ago. since then the bill was wrapped into the NDAA and passed the house:

The future of DJI drones in the U.S. remains uncertain. While the Countering CCP Drones Act, which proposes a ban on these drones, has gained significant support from lawmakers, it faces several hurdles before becoming law. The bill must pass through both the House of Representatives and the Senate before reaching the president’s desk. If enacted, the legislation would likely include a transition period, potentially lasting three years or more, to allow for adjustments before the ban fully takes effect.

the power to weight ratio for the system seems pretty good, although the amflow launch bike is a bit heavier than a comparable levo.

At 19.2 kg or just over 42 lbs, it’s 2kg lighter than a S-Works Levo and rivals many SL emtbs. My standard Levo CC tips the scales at over 51lbs, a heavy beast in comparison. But that bike and motor (120Nm Boost Mode) appears at first glance to blow everything else out of the water in its weight class. The prototype itself with seemingly high end components looks like it was well thought out with 160/150 front to rear end travel, complimentary geometry, ability to convert to a mullet setup along with wireless add-ons such as T-Type tranny + pod shifter and touchscreen display with remote.

ahhh you’re right!! i was looking at the weight of the levo SL. FS MTB are heavy!

2.52+2.87kg for 600 wH, 105 nM, 850w peak power (250 rated LOL) is really pretty impressive.

compare to specialized SL2, 1.95kg + 1.8kg, 320wH, 50 nM, 320w peak power.

2.64kg heavier for close to twice the power and battery. mostly in the battery. also appears extremely compact.

DJI know a lot about electric motors and batteries, but i’m not sure how much they know about gears and the software that’ll make a powerful mid drive feel like riding a regular bike!

OK now we have someone kicking *** with motors and more. Unfortunately it's all proprietary, but hey they are still kicking the big boys where it hurts.

With this and the (very small) ZF motor system it's interesting that these developments are coming from outside the bike industry. Probably because Spesh, Trek etc are all in survival mode post covid whereas both Dji & ZF are using electric & battery knowledge from other fields and finding uses for that tech in the humble old bicycle- probably have decent war chests too to play around. With the market flat right now, have to see how sales of both these systems pick up. And what the other motor manufacturers do to respond- another step in the low weight and size but powerful direction of travel.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see how these two companies evolve over the next couple of years and how their products measure up against the competition. DJI appears to have taken the first step forward in integrating their complete system in a SL weight full power emtb whereas ZF has chosen instead to mount their motor into 3rd party frames and have teamed up with partners to produce the batteries and top tube controllers. It’s more or less been confirmed that the Raymon Tarok will be the first production emtb to run the ZF Centrix motor. With that said, I think that it will only be a matter of time before both companies integrate the technology to road and/or gravel going versions.

Interesting too that in that clip above they mention that people were queuing around the block at Eurobike to get a look at the DJI bike & motor. Hadn’t realised that DJI had such a following. I guess drones, like smart phones are one of the ‘hot’ technologies. If that keeps up maybe their sales will be from new mountain bikers eager to try out the DJI bikes. Like Tesla & fanboys etc.

So many inventions to soon pave the Hell's floor :)
Such pessimism Stefan. Even if these companies do not achieve mainstream status in the ebike world, I maintain that there’s always room for innovation and growth which can only encourage others to follow or exceed in their footsteps. They maybe the new kids on the block but I give them full credit for what they have accomplished and that might simply have been to open the eyes and arouse interest of the competition.
