The puzzle is how to use the darn thing. I've never seen an app before that lacks a proper manual. For example - how do you reset the mileage and time? Or turn audio prompts on and off?

Bosch has a video that shows all the customization that can be done, but it doesn't say how.

And, it's quirky. Mid ride today, the screen flipped upside down. Why? At least basic speed and distance were easy to read upside down.

Anyone know of resources that are useful? Bosch's website manual is useless, and seems to have been written for the DOS era. Do they know you can use graphics on the web?

Sorry for the rant, but I find the thing so bad I'm tempted to junk it for something else.

Howdy! I'm just coming across this specific thread---I do agree, the Cobi.Bike manual could be better displayed in much of our content on the Bosch eBike Systems site. I know at this point I have replied to a couple of your comments in other threads, but for the betterment of the forum, I'll like the manual below again.

Cobi.Bike User Manual

If you don't mind, I will answer your questions below line by line. I'm also going to share some screen casts from my Allant setup that should help get you in the right direction. The screencasts are attached in a .zip file to this reply. It's the only way to upload them to EBR.

A few notes on each video.

Bike Settings.mp4
  1. In this cast, please note I am selecting the dark blue banner at the bottom of my phone screen where you see, "Phunky," my nickname and what I've named my bike. We refer to this as the Status Bar
  2. The battery percentage bar there, reading 100% reflects you eBike's battery percentage.
  3. The small wrench icon to the left indicates there is a service interval due
  4. The small red dot indicates there is a software update available for the Smartphone Hub
  5. Hitting the ">" play button in the far right corner will wake your bike up and engage the Cobi.Bike dashboard screen
  6. After clicking on the "Phunky" banner at the bottom, this enters the screen that shows the hub and says, "Ready to Go."
  7. In the upper left hand corner, you will notice a gear icon which will take you into your bike settings.
  8. This is where you can see the odometer of the bike and have access to change different fields such as, "Bike Name," "Bike Type," and also where you can reset the range calculation.
Profile Settings.mp4
  1. In this cast, we start again from the Cobi.Bike home screen and click on the gear/settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. Here, is where we change any settings to our Cobi.Bike profile. On top of that, we can add external sensors like heart rate monitor.
  3. This screen also houses connected services such as your Komoot account and Strava.
  4. The COBI.Bike app does not store historical ride data past 24 hours.
  5. A paired Strava account (it can be the free version) is required for a user to access completed ride data.
  6. Following a "Completed Tour," the Cobi.Bike app will automatically send all the ride data, (time, power, speed, cadence, heart rate (if applicable), GPS track, etc.) to a successfully connected Strava app.
  7. There is not trip statistics portion of the Cobi.Bike app. The app simply shows ongoing tours and completed tours within a 24-hour period.
  8. Failure to have a Strava account paired will prevent a rider from seeing previous ride data.

Voice Commands.mp4
  1. In this cast, we enter the Quick Settings tab from within the Dashboard screen. This is done by selecting the "^" in the bottom left corner.
  2. Here is where we can see the weather forecast for the next two hours.
  3. Additionally, we have access to three "on/off" toggles on the left portion of the screen.
  4. From top to bottom, these represent:
    1. Charge port for your phone
    2. Voice commands
    3. eBike Lights

how do you reset the mileage and time?

  1. Please refer to the Profile Settings video and notes.

Or turn audio prompts on and off?
  1. Please refer to the Voice Commands video and notes.

Mid ride today, the screen flipped upside down. Why?
  1. This I am uncertain on. Could you please provide further details? On my iPhone, the Dashboard can only be viewed by turning the phone 90 degrees to the right. If I try and flip my phone the other way, the app screen does not move at all unless I go 90 degrees back to the left (straight up and down at this point) then I am asked if I'd like to pause or complete my tour.
Hope this helps! Please reach out with further questions.

This is very useful, especially your notes in the second section regarding Strava and historical data. Never in my life would I have guessed that's how historic ride data is stored. I've been hunting online for the secret!

Any idea why it's not documented anywhere else, or did I just miss it?

Regarding the screen flip, in two subsequent rides, it's stayed right side up. Reading the main screen upside down on the one ride wasn't that hard.

Thank you much for the help. Now if I can just find a way to get my planned rides from Komoot to the device, I'll be much happier.

You're welcome, it's my pleasure.

As far as Komoot, a couple of questions.

  • Have you confirmed within the Cobi.Bike app that your Komoot account is toggled on within connected services?
    • This can be found via going through the Cobi.Bike settings on the home screen in the upper right corner.
    • Then scrolling down to connected services.

  • Secondly, do you have your region in Komoot "released" (this is the verbiage they use). I believe** (need to confirm) that this neccessitates a premium membership to Komoot.
    • Are you a premium Komoot member?

  • I do not personally use Komoot too much---I have a profile and have it sync'd to my Cobi app. A test route I planned via Komoot did not immediately sync to my Cobi app. I have a hunch that it is due to my lack of premium membership. I plan to ask around or potentially subscribe to premium to check.

Thank you for getting back to me. Yes, I have Komoot toggled on. I also paid to have all regions released, so that's not an issue either.

Your third bullet suggests you found the same problem? It would be really sad if cobi.bike required Komoot premium.

I've thought of going to my LBS to see if I can replicate the problem either on another bike or by having an employee try to connect to my bike, but the LBS is over one hour away, and I'd rather ride....but at least I could then distinguish between a bad head unit, a phone issue or a cobi.bike issue.

Solved my Komoot connectivity problem. Don't need premium! The fix was to uninstall the cobi.bike app and then re-install it. Maybe the order apps are loaded makes a difference, since when I reinstalled, Komoot and Strava were already installed. Who knows...

Thank you all for your help and support.

Found yet another quirk in the cobi.bike app, android version. In order to get a route from Komoot, I need to go to settings connected services and toggle Komoot off then on, otherwise I get the offline problem. It also doesn't seem to follow your route perfectly if you import a tcx file. At least for me, it starts where I am now, not where my route as planned in Komoot starts.

This seems to be a strange app with a few bugs, at least under android.

Resurrecting an old thread....
Getting my 8s ready for a new riding season, after a 5 month break for winter. Updated Cobi.bike through the android app store. Figured out how to get to the bike settings with the current version of cobi.bike (hint, not like last year). In bike settings, I can find serial and part numbers for the hub and the battery, but not for the DU. It just says type "UNSPECIFIED". Is this a feature or a bug? Does it matter?

Is it normal to have no notices of updates or services after a year of ownership?

Thanks

Dont know if you would ever get notifications of updates for the motor and battery. service is just when the dealer added a number of miles not by time.

I don't know either! That's why I asked. But if you look at post #2 above, Steven, a Bosch team member, suggested that there might be a notice.

It would be good if someone from Bosch clarifies.

my nyon has never shown when updates are available or the ebike connect. it will show when there is a nyon update but thats it.

Moving beyond updates, my other question is why the system doesn't report anything about the DU, even though it does for the battery and for the hub. I don't think your nyon experience is very relevant to the smartphone hub, especially since cobi.bike wasn't even developed by Bosch.

The Bosch eBike Connect app will not alert a rider of updates available for the battery and drive unit. It will give you notices when entering the app if updates are available for your Kiox or Nyon.

That is odd your drive unit is not appearing. Have your tried removing the bike and reconnecting the the hub? Here is a screenshot of my Cobi app this morning with components.

Thanks for your reply, Stephen. Just did an experiment - took an older phone with cobi.bike 1.18.1 - not updated. It read the motor information fine. I'm going to go for my first ride of the year, and will update this older phone when I return and see if it's phone related, app version related or just a random glitch.
Stay tuned!

I now vote for random glitch. My older android phone worked fine for today's (short) ride. Updated cobi.bike upon return, and the updated software still showed the DU information with the old phone. Since that's the one I use for rides (my newest one stays stowed), I don't see a problem going forward.

BTW, everything worked fine on two Allant 8s, even without spring maintenance (which I'll do next week). Tires only needed about 15lbs of air. We stowed the batteries indoors at about 70% charge, and they didn't appear to have lost much, if any charge in 4 months.

That's great eBike ownership right there. Here's to a great spring of happy and healthy riding!
Thank you. As much as I might be critical of the smartphone hub and cobi.bike, I also read of all the problems folks have with other systems. For us, two seniors who need all the help we can get on our rides, it's very satisfying to hit the road for a new riding season and finding everything functioning normally after the winter hiatus. Our ride today was a short one, to our favorite lunch stop, only 12 miles, but still included almost 900 feet of elevation gain, according to strava. That meant we gave all power levels a good workout, not to mention the full range of bike gears, with everything working fine!
