Cheap DIY Battery Modules

To my inexpert eyes, these look a lot like hoverboard batteries w/o the shrink wrap. Maybe not. Nonetheless, not for me.

Edit: After reading some good reviews and confirming them, I bought one in June 2016. Soon bought more.

I should have made my point more clear. If you spend $500 on a battery rebuild and stick the crappy Ecotric BMS back in there, the battery will be brain dead.

I'm surprised more kits aren't using new 36V and 40V powertool battery packs. Being able to use a free powertool battery pack rider all ready owns would make for cheaper build. Might also help in powertool sales. I'd find it it lot easier to justify purchase of expensive 40V powertool if battery is being used daily on commuter.

Whoops. Replied in the wrong thread. It was about rebuilding the Ecotric battery pack and re-use of their BMS which is a bad idea..

Meanwhile, here's what happened to my hoverbomb batteries. Got five summers of use out of them, used as main batteries and spares on my little folding bikes. Retired them in 2021 because they were wearing out.

I use 60V DeWalt tool batteries to power my 52V bike. At only 4AH, they have a limited range though. I use them mostly as emergency range extenders. 3 or 4 would have to be wired in parallel to be useful as a main power source and that can get expensive. Each battery has it's own BMS which is convenient but requires multiple chargers to keep charge times reasonable.
