Cassette Question

Hi all, I am looking to lighten my Yamaha Civante as much as possible while upgrading componentry to get smoother shifting. My question is, can I swap out a 10spd Tiagra Cassette for a 10spd 105 or Ultegra? The Brifters are Tiagra. I would also swap out the Tiagra rear derailleur for a 105 10spd and possible the crank set which is a SAMCX for a 105 if possible. Seat post, saddle and tires are among other parts that will be replaced.

Thanks,

Larry

The 105s are now only made in 11-speed. So you’d have to get the ?6-yr? Old 105s. Whichever older model Shimano made in the 10-speed for both the cassette and rear derailleur. You definitely can’t use the Ultegra cassette because those aren’t available in 10-speed. Let me know if you find a website selling these 105 10-speeds bc I am interested in those. They won’t be available with time (because they’re discontinued) so I’d like to buy them now and save them to use in the future.

There are plenty of 105 10 speed cassettes available from multiple online stores and Amazon.

And here is an Ultegra

The 105 is 11-25. Ours is 11-32T. Will this work?

Yes it will but if you look at the pull down tabs or scroll down you will see that they have 11-28. I think the largest that they came in was 11-30. It just means you will have a narrower range of gears. Personally, I prefer a narrow range as it allows you to find a comfortable cadence when in the middle gears. I am never going to use a 30T on an ebike unless I was doing mountains. If you search you might be able to find an 11-30T. I run an 11-28 on my current bike and I could go even smaller since I have a triple crank. My son runs 11-26 on his road bike.

By the way, talk to your LBS and see if you may need a spacer with the 105 or Ultegra 10 spd cassettes. I think you might from what I have read but I am not sure. I am going to buy the 105 but I have to talk to my shop.

I use all of my gears so I don’t think that will work for me but thanks for the info.

Yamaha says the motor’s software was tuned to be used by a 10-speed cassette. I know Giant’s software is tuned to be used by an 11-speed. But Giant uses the more powerful PWX-2 Yamaha motor. I know more gears help us use less watts bc we can peddle at higher cadences which makes climbs easier. Maybe an 11-speed on our software wouldn’t allow us to be in the “sweet spot” for optimal motor support (which I think is between 70-80 cadence). I also know that our software was tuned to help us get to 28mph at any gear when we approach a cadence of 100. Other guys on here know more about this motor science than I do. What are your thoughts?
