Hello forum,
I am looking to upgrade my hardtail bicycle to an ebike and is looking for the best conversion kits that are available as of now 2017.
They might be mid drive or rear hub drive.
Cost - under $2000.
motor - 250w that is the legal limit in India.

Thank you
Regards

Do you need to climb hills or will you mostly be cycling on flat roads?
Will you mostly be riding on dusty country roads or on asphalt pavement?
How far will you need to travel?

In US market $2000 can get you a decent ebike, not just a kit.
If you insist on a kit... You have to specify your needs.

A lot of steep hills - get a kit with mid-drive or a geared hub motor. (I don't remember if there are any mid-drives 250W, mostly they are 350W and higher).
Flat roads and moderate hills - get a direct drive hub motor or a geared hub. Direct drives tend to last longer than a geared hub.
Long distance without charging - get a bigger battery (hard to tell how big, I would suggest at least 360 WH, unless your trips are very short under 10 km).

Other details are minor (IMO):
There can be cadence sensor (motor assist depends on how fast you rotate the pedals), or a torque sensor (motor assist depends on how much effort you put into pedaling). With either type there can be a "Throttle" option, when you hit the button and motor runs without any pedaling - this option is not allowed in some areas, check your local traffic laws. Some motors don't have a Throttle option, but most of them do.

There is only about a dozen of reputable motor brands (if not less).

To give you an idea of types of motors and other components, here is a place in the US: https://lunacycle.com/motors/. No affiliation, never bought anything from them, but I like the selection and prices. I can't say about India.

Check out the guys at lectriccycles.com. Ask for Mitch or Chris. They have some of the best performing kits in the industry. They are located in Las Vegas but ship all over.

Luna does not allow 250w motors on the premises, only wow factor wattage's.
They are in the US market. Not too many people here would willingly limit themselves to 250W, if given a choice :). I provided the link mostly for informational purposes, don't even know if they ship to India.

Hemant - in case if it wasn't clear in my long post, - sorry but there is no such thing as "the best kit". It all boils down to motor and controller. There is only a dozen or half a dozen decent brands of motors, and a good kit will inevitably use one of those.

Hello ,
Sorry for late reply.
My ride type is city roads around 10 miles a day.
As far as kit goes it will be more costly to import a complete ebike rather than a stand alone kit.
I liked the Bionx newer models and they are available in India.
If I can get a better kit than Bionx on the and ebike under $2000 then I might buy complete Ebike system.
Thank you

To repeat, if you're in India, why buy something that's made in China, shipped to the USA and pay to have it shipped back across the ocean? Not to mention you have to pay the vendor the profit he needs so he can stay in business? Find a local importer or buy direct from China.

I've had mixed results buying small things off aliexpress. Simple parts are inexpensive, take a while to ship, but are generally good, and shipping not expensive. Sometimes, the electronics don't work as expected, and then I am stuck. For example, I bought a small 350W controller that didn't have a useable pedal assist. I read the ad wrong. Great for throttle, and cheap at $43 USD shipped with an LCD. I threw it away, kept the LCD, and bought a $21 model with pedal assist. So stay away from aliexpress ubless you know exactly what you want.

I would look at kits from elifebike.com and BMSbattery.com. I have bought motors/controllers from both and they work fine. Another vendor, said to be reputable, but I have no experience is em3ev.com. Owner is English, lives in China, and can answer your questions. A 36 volt 350W motor kit will let you ride 20 miles easily.

You don't solder or use tools or know how an ebike is put together? Then you might have to go with a full turnkey kit. Chinese kits have no instructions. They expect you to be experienced. . E-bikes are not trivial, but they require electrical knowledge and bicycle expertise.

Luna sells the Xiongda 2-speed hub which is 250 watts.

If you are talking about 250 watt hubs, I would agree, but a lot of people can't afford more.

The US market is blooming with OEM bikes running 250 watt mid-drives from Bosch, Shimano, etc, and people are buying them. The power output and efficiency from these mids is changing perceptions about 250 watts.

Thank for the reply
As I mention that Bionx is available in India, so if I would buy a kit it would be a Bionx kit.

Question:
Which one is better a premium Kit like Bionx or completely Intreated Ebike?
In terms of performance, comfort Quality of kit and battery.

Thank you

In the USA, I'd rather buy a complete ebike like a Juiced Cross Current for half the price of a Bionix kit, where I still have to buy the bike.

I don't care for Bionix of the prices, and becasue they have engineered the whole kit such that you have to buy their batteries when yours wears out. They do offer a great warranty here though.

Ok

Ok
If we compare ebike Kit and Binox Kit , which one is better.
As Import duty and tax and shipping cost compound to 40 % of the cost of the Ebike , I have to really consider whether to ship or not. (any suggestion on this)
Thank you

Just my two cents. We are a new dealer for Elby which uses the Bionx D500 setup. Having been a Stromer dealer and ridden an ST2 extensively, I must admit that the D500 kit from Bionic is as powerful, smoother, and as customizable (you can turn it into a 28mph speed pedelec) than the Stromer. The Bionx folks have produced a very smooth natural ride without all the herky jerky torque adjustment settings. And, as a dealer, their diagnostic kit is much more sophisticated than the Stromer and gives a detailed look at the performance of the motor, the battery, and the controller.
