Battery charge

Have a Trek Allant 8s purchased in March, a few hundred miles on it. Battery now charges only to 98%. Not terrible, but not ideal.

Is this normal? The LBS where I purchased is an hour away. I probably need to drag the bike in, but in the meantime, does anyone have a comment?

Congrats on the new bike!

This is likely not an issue with your battery, but an issue with the way the software in your display is displaying battery charge level.

I believe you have the Smartphonehub on your Allant? Have you used your Cobi app to perform a software update on the SPH hub recently?

No. Do I get an update reminder? If so, haven't seen one.

I'll go pair it and check....

I'm not sure if Cobi sends a reminder, but I don't think it does. The software update may not solve it, but it's the first thing to check when experiencing minor issues such as battery % readout.

My app is up to date, and has been since the June release of the update. Today, when I unplugged the charger for a ride, it said 100% for a few seconds. When I put the phone in the cradle and connected it a few seconds later, the phone said 98%. Strange.

I'm making a visit to the seller in the next week - part of my monthly run to civilization, so I'll show them. It will be interesting to se what they say.

Thank you for looking into this!

Very interesting. I'll ask the rest of my team if they've heard of anything like this.

I understand the want for everything to be right- that's how I feel when I buy something. The good news is that I think this is likely just a software-based cosmetic hiccup.

I'll get back to you once I've learned something new one this.

In my experience (Bosh Nyon on a R&M), the full charge % will fluctuate up to 3%. Generally I've noticed if I discharge the battery quite a bit (<20%) then the next charge will go to 100%. But if I just charge it when I'm over half full, I'll usually get to 98%. I've always chalked this up to Bosh's battery management/display. With lithium batteries, many (all?) battery management/charge systems won't charge the battery up to the exact same capacity every time. Often the management system will let it fluctuate a few percent, and adjust the displayed capacity so that the end user doesn't see it, and thus doesn't raise a question about it being "broken".

When your battery has reached 100% charge or when it switches off charging indicating completion do you disconnect the charger immediately?
The Bosch battery BMS may be performing balancing at this stage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_balancing), so perhaps occasionally leaving it plugged in longer may be beneficial.
Most Lithium packs have this and therefore 100% is not always 100% nor known accurately at any time. It should know 0% with a high degree of accuracy though.
Also the battery =may= need to go from completely flat or close to 0%, to 100% every now and then to determine exactly how much capacity is left in the battery (as this declines over age) so as to determine where 0 & 100% are.

I ride every other day or so. I just plug it in when I get home and unplug it when I start my next ride. I'm going to where I purchased it on Friday. I'll see what they say.

The beauty of the Purion is that you are ignorant of what accurate percentage of charge you’ve actually attained.🤓
