Bad controller or bad headlight

The other day I noticed my headlight was not coming on even though the icon on the controller said it was on. The tail light was also not on but both the brake lights and the tail light flasher worked. I informed Rad and they had me checking connections etc. which were all fine. They just informed me they were sending me a new controller under warranty. I thought it was a bad headlight. I've been riding the bike and everything works but the headlight&tail light. I guess if it was just a bad headlight that the tail light would still work?

First thing I would do is pull the connector leading to the headlight and see if you're getting any voltage (assuming you have a voltmeter?). If so, you likely have a bad headlight or a bad connection somewhere beteen that connection and the headlight (maybe internally, within the headlight?). If there is no voltage at the connection, there's a break in the wire between there and the controller (isn't there another connection closer to the controller?), or it's the controller itself.

Thanks. I was going to try that but doesn't look like I can with my meter unless I cut off the connector and expose the wires and didn't think that was a good idea. See pic. Guess there must be some meter that would access those tiny holes but not mine.

Stick a straight pin or something in those sockets (carefully!) to let you get a reading.

I seem to remember that my Rover has a switch on the back of the headlight in addition to the ability to turn it on from the controller. Not sure if the rear light has one.

Are they sending you the LCD or the controller (mounted on the rear frame)?

I assumed it was the LCD. It just said Controller 2020X1 Rover ST and that it would have cost $100 if it wasn't warranty.

Yesterday after a ride I got an idea. I disconnected the headlight, turned on the power, and turned on the headlight. Obviously the headlight didn't come on but the tail light did. I relayed that bit of info to Rad and they canceled the controller and are sending a new head light.

Maybe they learned something...

Good trouble shooting means less chance of just throwing parts at an issue to see if that fixes the issue, which leads to a better chance of getting it right the first time, which then leads to better customer satisfaction/loyalty.

I do give them credit for trying vs. sticking their head in the sand....

Good job!!

Not to mention saving them $75 which is the difference between a new controller and a new head light not including the cost of shipping a part that wouldn't fix the problem. I ran across another forum yesterday that was just for Rad owners. There was a post from two days ago from a person with a two week old Rad Runner with what sounded like the exact same problem and they were sending him a new controller too. I joined the forum and explained what I had gone through and hopefully it helped.
