APPLE AIRTAGS THE NEW BIKE LOJACK?

I purchased a pack of Airtags a few days ago. I'm not using it as anti-theft tracker as that's not it's main function. Right now, I have them installed in our two vehicles. I park many blocks away in the neighborhoods surrounding the building where I work. I'm in a different spot every day so it's nice knowing where the car is without having to drop a pin on the map. It's really interesting to me see how often the Airtag gets pinged. On the app, it shows you the last time it was in contact with an iOS device.
So about how often is it getting pinged?

From what I see, about every 5 minutes. When I'm at home in the suburbs, it's likely much less because there's less traffic. But there isn't a log. I only see the x minutes ago text when I check in on the app. There will likely be some app that will have that functionality in the near future.

I got one for my calipers in my woodworking shop. for some reason when I glued it to the caliper it is pretty quiet so maybe the body is part of the sound system. the direction part is good finding them in my shop its often too noisy to use sound anyway.

Yup. You're right. The shell is part of the speaker.

Yeah...I’m not gluing these to anything. It could make changing the batteries much more difficult.

I have to not much other way to attach it.

Saw an article about carefully drilling into the shell to hang your own handstrap / lanyard. It definitely takes away the weather resistance though.
Yeah...not gonna do it! I’ll spring $12 for the Belkin. There will likely be some $2 ones at Walmart within a month or two.

Agreed. When I activated the AirTag and put it on the bike and noted the location exactly

Guess what guys it turns out it is three days where are you can track which is really a lot longer than I thought and I expect that will change.

What’s great about that these air tags is that you cannot trigger the location until you want.

Previously I speculated that the Air Tags would succeed where others had failed because they are integrated into Apple's IOS system instead of depending on an app from the tracker manufacturer.

I researched 'Tile' and similar devices as a way to locate a fly-away drone. The problem with any bluetooth device is that it needs to come into proximity to a phone with the an app from the same manufacturer which has been granted permission by the user to recognize and report all contacts with that particular brand of tracker. With a 'Tile' device, that means having a phone with the 'Tile' app, in which the user has granted the app permission to report when it comes within 30' of a 'Tile' device. That's really a long shot. If Apple incorporates AirTag reporting as a part of the 'Find my iPhone' feature, then the number of phones which could report an 'AirTag' contact would be MUCH greater than the number of devices that could report a 'Tile' contact. The 'AirTag' could succeed where other devices have failed, not because the hardware is better, but because Apple can leverage the massive numbers of iPhone users to make the product successful.

It seems my prediction was spot on. :)

They made them incompatible with iphones older then 11....hmmm it's just a software unlock.
I'm amazed that Apple doesn't charge a 7.99$ monthly fee for using this ones. Esp. b/c they are really working.
Special bundle deal 4 tags , @ 19.99$/monthly fee 😉

Just bought a set of 4 now , ty for the clip. 1 inside the seattube, 1 inside battery compartment, and maybe a 3rd one under the headset.

Screenshot from the video , @9.24 mark it mentions about how it would work on preventing a bike theft.

They’re not incompatible with older iPhones. They just won’t have ultra wide band so the precise location feature won’t work. It’ll still be able to make a sound when in Bluetooth range.

My single is shipped but a 4 pack apparently not available until mid to late June?
