This one occurred on a trail I occasionally ride and has been given a lot of attention by local TV & the press.

Unfortunately, these incidents have become more frequent over the last few years. I fear it is due to press coverage which just encourages juvenile delinquents and other demented individuals to copycat.

As a result, I've added the Back Mountain Trail to my "no ride" list. As a rule, I ride urban trails much less frequently than I did a few years back. I realize there is no guarantee of safety on rural trails either but so far, there have been no incidents on those I ride regularly.

I don't see any way to protect yourself from these "traps". You would think the relatively thick rope used in this incident would have been easily spotted by the experienced cyclist. Many of these incidents however involve piano or barbed wire which is nearly impossible to see.

It is so sad to see that our society has evolved to include so many degenerates who get a thrill from harming innocent people.

Sorry for the editorial. Thankfully, these incidents are still relatively rare but this one hit a little too close to home.
