It will be fine for whom I am gifting to as is. These are not as bad as you think with proper assembly and adjustments.Be ready to upgrade some parts. I bought a $350 shipped mid-drive bike this summer. Replaced seat, brake calipers, pedals, chain, freewheel, and derailleur. It's now a decent around town bike, but it's total costs is now around $500.
The problem with cheap bikes is that they are made out of cheap parts. Being an optimist, I believe you can make 'em decent enough, and you get some theft protection added in for free.
I have found the same thing is true of non-powered bikes as well.I do have a fair amount of experience with cheap DTC bikes. Every single component on them is bottom of the line.
Before gifting the bike ride it around to make sure it's safe to ride. A saddle replacement is mandatory at that price point.
You don't have those extra parts in your basement collection of beater bikes? These cheaper bikes usually have the Shimano Tourney TZ-250 derailleur and a 14-34 freewheel that works. No real meed to change, You might swap in cable operated hydraulics for $25/wheel but full SHimano MT200's (probably fake) are 50 bucks a set. Of course, a seat change comes with the territory on any bike, I woulda bought your bike too, not that I needed one, but apparantly it wasn't stocked in the midwest.Be ready to upgrade some parts.
