3 million e-Bikes sold in Europe in 2019, Belgium hits 51% of sales

New data collected by LEVA-EU covering European territories suggests that in 2019 around 3 million e-bikes were sold in Europe.

Versus Maybe, 500,000 ebikes purchased this year in the US.

Industry experts will cite that Europe is at least 5 years ahead of the US in terms of embracing and adopting ebikes. And where the US has a population of regular bike purchasers, only about 5% actually ride their non electric bikes regularly. Whereas, more than 40% of Europeans use their non electric bikes regularly, and also many use them for commuting.

In Germany alone, 1 million of those ebikes were purchased last year.

They dont allow throttles. They only go up to 15 mph speeds.

We have a long long way to go here. And many US ebike buyers are over 60, and haven't ridden a regular bike in decades. It's nice to see ebikes bringing people back into 'biking' even if it's 'assisted.'

Covid 19 really accelerated purchases this year. It'll be interesting to see how long the demand remains this strong.

Speaking as a well over 60 buyer, I’d been riding my regular Trek bike for years but was watching their evolution into ebikes for 3 years when I decided this was the year to buy. I imagine Euro buyers to be more commuter-oriented given car & gas prices there. I’m guessing U.S. buyers to be more fitness & recreational oriented buyers.

Yep on both. Fewer of them in EU even own cars, while Americans worship their cars, and go broke doing so (subprime and upside down 7 year loans anyone?) . So hence why use a bike for commuting ? , likely goes the sentiment here in our country.

We also don't have very good bike infrastructure throughout the US, and the dominance of massive SUV's, large pick ups, 18 wheelers, and texting/phoning while driving on roads that bikers would need to 'brave', doesnt exactly induce biking or ebiking to work when people understand the risks they face on attempting to use these regular vehicular roads, when there are relatively very few safer paths that allow us to get to our place of employment.
