So most of the regulars here have read my mentions about having done a major update to a nearly new 6 week old bike that I wasn't getting along with. This included the replacement of just about all of the electrical/electronics (using a similar KT based controller and LCD3 display to the one now supplied by Bolton), and while I was at it I replaced the 750 watt stock direct drive hub with a 1500w direct drive hub. That was nice, fixed many of my issues, but after a lot of miles it became apparent it was not quite enough power at the lower speeds for some of the hills I run frequently.
Enter the geared hub MAC 12t motor. This is not going to be a detailed install of the MAC motor. It's just a quick note regarding the fact that it can be done, what might be expected from it, and the fact the 12 mosfet 35a KT controller handles it just fine. It's smooth, quiet, and much peppier (especially at low 10mph or so speeds). This while using a little less wattage than the 1500w DD was using. It is NOT a wheel standing, near uncontrollable, accident looking for a place to happen. It IS pretty peppy when asked to get you through a busy intersection in a hurry (just make sure you are hanging on!). It is less likely to ask for a little extra throttle when navigating a slight rise. It kind of just powers through it.
In short, it's exactly what I was hoping for. It has enough extra grunt to propel this extra large rider in any condition I'll likely run into, without being too much, and without destroying the range of my battery.
A quick mention, that even after this latest update, the bike is still very reasonably priced, especially when compared to anything similarly equipped. DIY at it's finest! -Al
