....

As I ponder with the idea of switching to a Stromer bike (probably an ST1x) for commuting, I'm wondering about how waterproof the DD hub motor is.

I use an e-bike for about 700 kms per month on average, including in winter, so it needs to be fairly waterproof. I've already used a DD hub for a couple of months but not for long enough to really understand the long term effects of water intrusion. Just how water proof is the Cyro/Syno motor casing? Are there any side effects when cleaning the cassette with specialised products? I'm asking because I'll be cleaning the cassette about twice per month in the summer and once every two months in the winter. As the cassette cleaning products eat away at dirt and grime, they might also chew away at the motor casing and any internal (rubber?) materials destined to seal the drive so its watertight.

How do you Stromer owners deal with this?

It is water resistant and I would say 70% waterproof as well. I have ridden it in rain and all kinds of winter conditions. It has held up well.
I would be more concerned with the water ingress into the downtube controller compartment.

Great question Id love to know how the bike is waterproof in general! Would it survive a very heavy rain shower?
Ive emailed Stromer directly to ask. As living in Ireland its a regular thing!

Got a nice reply from Stromer - doesnt really answer the cleaning the motor question! but I guess take great caution cleaning with a damp cloth. The cassette would be a bit more tricky - would taking it off be an option - probrably not ! Id hate to think what degreaser would do to the motor if it found its way inside!!!

Thanks for your interest in Stromer Bikes.

The Stromer Bikes can be ridden even if its raining. There should not be an issue.
But, it is recommended to keep the battery in house overnight, if you would be keeping the bike outside.

Stromer Bikes are not completly waterproof, whereas we do not recommend cleaning the Bike at high pressure.
