No, you can't tell if there's a spring fitted. My bike came from a LBS and I assumed they would have put it together properly. Only today (a mere 18 months / 4k+ miles later) did I get around to checking and guess what: No spring fitted! Funnily enough the future shock mechanism seems to work...

I just removed mine completely (connectors are accessible in top tube via tcu on TV SL5). Why did I do this... Well I don't ride at night and I need an attention grabbing flashing front light for self preservation. This is perfect for what I need and fits on the handlebar.
