Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

Check it. 45Nm torque is 29kgf for a 16cm 8mm allen tool. Basically, if you can tighten it by hand with a 16cm allen tool - it was too loose. Either that or buy a 3/8" torque wrench... I'd do that before going anywhere near a dealer, most are incompetent. Oh, and use some anti-seize on the...

Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

The crank bolt torque is 45Nm, so far higher than a 1/4" torque wrench can achieve. Basically about as tight as you can get with a normal length 8mm allen tool without standing on it... I keep an eye on mine and recheck the bolts every month or so - if you ride with loose cranks; the...

Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

Not wanting to irk you; but mine is dead silent, with 7000kms on it, and I have 400m of climbing on my daily commute. Have you tightened the crank bolts? I apply copper grease to the crank splines and threads, and same grease to the motor bolt seating surfaces. I recheck the cranks every month...

Debris stuck in the wheel? Strange noise on my Giant Explore 3 (MY2019)

Sounds like a bit of metal in the rim cavity, maybe a lost nipple when the wheel was built or some bit of rim extrusion floating about..

The time to pop the stem top cap off would be less than posting a question, but steerer tube is std 1.125" (31.75mm). I run a 90mm 6deg Redshift stem with the lightest elastomer (they are designed for drop-bar roadies that have half their body weight hanging over the bar). Choose your...

Longer! These bikes have geometry stuck in the dark ages. There are numerous forum reports of riders complaining of head shake, esp with a loaded rear rack/pannier. If you ride down a hill and take your hands off you quickly realise you can get into a tank slapper with the slightest...

Still single-pot calipers and a rear QR... so dumb on a heavy ebike. At least they've put sealed bearing hubs on it. Wish they'd update the reach to something more modern and better handling.

Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

30Nm is too much for an M8 fine pitch thread. 22Nm is mentioned in that service manual and I wouldn't go above 20Nm unless you have a good quality wrench.

    New Chain & Cassette

    Quick-E+

Noticed the rear hub had a developed a rumble when spinning the wheel. Stripped the cup & cone bearings and found the drive side balls had shed their chrome and the cone was well pitted. Grease was silver and full of metal. Non-drive side was clear and green, cone had a small amount of pitting -...

Widespread Giant motor creaking problem - time for a recall?

Interesting find David. I don't think the designed free-play they refer to is responsible for the creaks we get on our bikes. Personally, I wouldn't leave a creak in the BB area. There's a lot of force being transmitted down there and bad things happen quickly when play develops. Ovalised motor...

Sorry to hear about your bike Alan, that sucks. I think the 2019 Quick E+ was a great year - the Fastroad that replaced it was only supplied with a 400W battery. Maybe a hard tail mtb would suit you better? Similar price bracket as a commuter, but better off road. WFH suit you? Seems to be the...

    Giant 2020 Explore E+ Lowest Gear/Derailleur failure

" I was going uphill in a medium gear and encountered a steep incline on loose gravel. I was under full power and tried shifting into the lowest gear as the rear wheel began to spin." That's the problem right there, regardless of derailleur tuning/hanger integrity.
