    Rolled over the odometer

Rolling the odometer is nothing new for you high mileage riders, but this was a particularly important milestone for me following neurosurgery to remove 2 brain tumors 5 months ago. I have ridden the last 1,400 miles since surgery, riding with my bride most every day, including yesterday’s 50...

    Catastrophic Blow-out

Catastrophic blow-out. Those were the first words my Trek Tech said as he eyed my rear tire when I carried my bike into the Trek shop where I bought my Allant 7s. No injuries or damage, other than the tire. I was on clear asphalt path going <10 mph next to my wife when we thought we heard a...

Smiles and waves from pedestrians we pass

Whether my wife and I are riding as a pair, or leading groups as we often do, we like doing a little extra to keep a positive relationship with the pedestrians we meet and pass. Almost all! Or at least 10 out of 11 passing encounters complete with the pedestrian(s) giving us a wave, a smile...

    Bosch motor clarification question

What is the difference between the Performance Speed motor that I have on my Trek Allant and the Performance Line Sport on my wife’s Trek Verve 4s? Both are Class 3 28mph, but the Sport is rated at 65Nm while the Speed is rated at 85Nm. What does Nm refer to?

    Intrigue—a Bosch System diagnostic report

Today we had an opportunity to perform a diagnostic., et.al., evaluation of my newest bike at 1k miles. The Bosch Kiox (which I love) displayed “maintenance required” with every Start starting after 998 miles.. The diagnostic report included an anomaly that we — my LBS tech, and me — cannot...

    Riding in mixed company

Mixed meaning 2 wheelers and recumbents. My wife and I ride with and lead several bike groups. Without trying to sound too supercilious, we find it less safe and more challenging to ride with recumbents because we cannot always see them as we track the group. And we fear that if we cannot see...

    Battery kill switch?

A buddy is have intermittent motor shut-off issues. We are guessing that this extra cable shown in the attached pix in both front and rear hand brake levers is a battery or motor disconnect switch. This is a class 2 bike. Are we on the right track? Is this cable connected to a kill switch? And...

How to ride in the smoke.

I live in Wisconsin. Today was a perfect day to ride. Virtually no one on the trails but idiots without a mask. We are being advised to wear N95s if venturing outside. My wife and I wore our left-over pandemic KN95s for our morning walk. Like yesterday, the Air Quality Alert level is touching...

    Kickstand mounting bolts stripped

Actually the frame threads stripped out for one mounting bolt. Does anyone know of a good fix? I am afraid the weight of the bike will strip out the threads for the other bolt.

    Bosch Motor Bearing Failure

What does a broken motor bearing feel like? I am trying to diagnose a recent "clicking" on engaging or sometimes when coasting. It is a Performance Speed Gen 4 motor. 6,300 miles -- over 90% in Turbo, ridden hard and fast. <2yrs old per warranty. The motor performs as normal. Just a click and...

Tucson Trail: Best parts to ride if only doing segments?

We winter in Gold Canyon, AZ and are interested in doing an overnight to ride sections of the Rillito River Path. Per the mix of riders in our group 50 miles per day would be stretching the upper limit. Where is a good area to hotel, and which two 1/3 sections would be the more scenic sections?

    Hi-Vis colors?

Up until several months ago we rode with whatever color our comfortable clothes displayed — often very dark to black. Then our riding group adopted hi-vis T-shirts. Soon thereafter we added hi-vis jackets, some got hi-vis helmets, etc. Now it has become more common to see hi-vis among area...

Must a bike have a drive motor to be called an ebike?

Or, what do you call a battery-electrified bike without a drive motor? If not already, soon acoustic bikes will be manufactured with a battery to enable smart, internet technologies, e.g., Bosch’s Smart System. Is it presumptuous to assume that only bikes with an electronic propulsion system...

Are Bosch Purion Controller speed calculations accurate?

Numerous times I encounter police street radar monitors whereon the speed of oncoming traffic is displayed. EVERY encounter shows my transport speed as consistently 2 mph SLOWER than what is displayed on my Purion controller. EX: The radar shows 13mph and the Controller displays 15mph. Per my...

    Allant+ 7s Maintenance Update

I expect more early maintenance. That Bosch Performance Speed motor is a brute. 1,250 miles in 10 weeks. Solo cruising speed: 24-28, Sport & Turbo almost exclusively Chain cleans and lubes, etc. every 300 miles. Started to experience some chain climb after shifts this week. Took bike into Trek...

    Lovin’ my new Allant+ 7s

I debated between the 8s & 7s and chose the 7s primarily for the suspended front fork (smooths out many street and trail bumps) and the rear carrier to which I added an MIK adapter so that I could swap my Bontrager trunk from my Verve+ 3. Have put on 250+ miles in 3 weeks. Been riding off road...

    Introductions & Bike Garage

Hello, e-bikers! From Madison, WI My wife & I purchased our bikes early May, 2020. We put on >2,100 miles before winter. We rode almost every day, fully enjoying the thrill of the ride. No hill is too high, no road is too long, nor wind is too strong. My wife has a Trek Verve+ 2, I have a Trek...
